To wysiwyg or not to wysiwyg that is the question!

  • To wysiwyg or not to wysiwyg that is the question!

    • I'd be first to admit that given the choice the good ol wysiwyg has always been my first and only option when it came to site layout. I can code html and know the basics to get me out of trouble in CSS and php (java is still alien though!) oh and I can flash code!

Being first and foremost more graphically inclined, I suppose in truth been somewhat limited in coding experience because of the invention of wsyiwig editors!

My tool of choice was always FrontPage, then a few years back I started to migrate to Dream weaver...but since coming back to tackle the CMS revolution again just recently, they have no real place except for editing php or the occasional css.

( ( I actually stopped when joomla was incepted as I always liked mambo, and honestly I wasn't sure which would be the one to develop...bit like Beta and VHS or the video disk and DVD, after 12 months which is now I had another look and the only one actually doing anything like growth was joomla so here I am again )

So anyhow until just a few weeks back again I thought woo hoo Joomla more easy wysiwyg editors, which I'm first to say are perfect for Clients to do their updates, but I found there was so much I was missing out on that RT offered.

First was being Typography...you can’t even use these “gold” scripts without turning off the editor and coding by hand! Then there are the other errors wysiwyg's generate!

While coding always seemed to me like the looong way to do things, but ever since I turned my editors OFF a week ago, I've actually found that coding can actually be a bit faster! AND you can better predict exactly what the page will look like when published.

Especially when it comes to any thing other than text, like actual Layout, I'm now appreciating what all the coders have been spilling at me for years...layout is easy to do with code AND it gives a better and more professional end result.

So now I being I’m still on the change over I've found that by making another admin permission in the admin control panel of joomla, I can set to wysiwyg to on and another to off. So now I get the best of both worlds.

There are benefits and shortfalls in both I believe. But I can now better appreciate the power coding gives me for actual layout and adding scripts etc…

I want to thank you guys here for helping me find this out! Reading so many posts saying TURN THE HORRIBLE THING OFF, time after time made me realize…hey ok I AM missing out aren’t I!

Time for a big but I trust fun learning curve,,,

    • Yeah. I know what you mean! I've been using the WYSIWYG editors this whole time. Then I join RT and have really started to LIKE turning them off. It's a bit of a curve, but well worth it.

    • I wonder if the WYSIWYG editor will need to be turned off in Joomla 1.5?

    • What is a wysiwyg? OK, I am kidding. I couldn't code my way out of a paper bag.

I don't really like many of the editors in Joomla. I prefer to create most things with Dreamweave,r and then copy and paste over.

    • Yeah. I love using Dreamweaver. I CAN code my way out of a paper bag, but I need a map, a flashlight, and style guide cheatsheet. I've been coding things in Joomla just to get better at it. I think copy/paste from Deamweaver would require too much work... and coordination. lol

    • The thing i like best about not using a wysisyg is how much faster the edit page loads without it!
