    K2 > MyBlog?

Posted 15 years 7 months ago
    • I am late getting on the K2 train, but just thought I would ask everyone's thoughts on K2 and its use for a blog; as a MyBlog user who hates their editor and the fact it's stripping out some code, I would love it anyone made the argument that K2 is a 'MyBlog killer.' ;)

Looking at the demo ( k2.joomlaworks.gr/demo-v2/ ) it looks like it has everything, right down to the comments.

      Thoughts?

I'll poke around a lot more and take it for a test drive this weekend, but seeing more and more talk about K2, so thought I would ask here....

    • ...and tell me you can limit which section/categories in which people can post? (another shortcoming of MyBlog).

    • I've had zero luck getting k2 working with the styles from rockettheme that supposedly support it. Here's an example of a thread I started trying to dig into why:

    • I have now been playing with K2 for some time, works awesome with RT themes and after initial problem with K2 it all seems pretty smooth sailing now. I to be honest am quite sold on K2 all I would like to see now is better integration between K2 and Jomsocial.

    • Okay, I think I can provide some feedback on this subject. I too was a MyBlog/JomComments user and was planning on deploying it to three sites. Actually, I did deploy to one besides my own, and am now converting off of Azrul's products to move to K2. I had at least 4 blog mulit-user issues submitted to Azrul. And although the responded, the response was always "we'll take that into consideration'. Which did not help me at all.

So, moving to K2, I can now get everything I originally wanted, which included, yes. limiting users to only be able to post in certain categories. I'm not saying that K2 is the be-all end-call. But it comes very close to what we have all been needing, nested categories and user groups with ACL restrictions.

Install K2, import your content, enable the K2 user login (you have to to enure users are working with the K2 software), build your user groups, assign your users to those groups, build your K2 categories, lastly change you content menu options to point to the K2 articles and update the articles to ensure they are now in the proper K2 categories.

I have it deployed on Affinity, Nexus, Versatility 4 and Infuse. The styling all works, except I did have to work on custom CSS and PHP for the Affinity item header.

The only glaring issue I have seen is that the Comments ReCaptha is a hit or miss with RocketTheme. I have two that work correctly (Versatility 4 & Infuse) and two that refuse to work correctly (Affinity and Nexus). So that is a real issue. Ideally, Id like RocketTheme to get their RokComments to work as a replacement for the comments in K2 which is usable, but could be better.

As a parting comment, most of this will be a moot point with Joomla 1.6 as it contains nested categories, comments and user management to include groups and ACL. Converting though may be a whole new challenge.

    • Hi Bill what specific issues were you having with MyBlog? I am using K2 and Jomsocial I implemented MyBlog and so far am pretty pissed at it. The problem I am having is so basic it is not funny, I simply cannot get any modules to display with MyBlog for instance anything in the left module position.

This makes no sense to me at all, seeing as it uses Joomla categories and sections and as such have modules set to those, even menu assignment but no matter what I try it does not work.

I have MyBlog working quite fine, and is an easy way to give people their own blog, but with such a simple design and display issue I am rethinking the entire implementation of it. Jomsocial is working tip top and have no issue with that.

My second gripe is no integration between K2 and Jomsocial or Jomcomments this is also a major pain in the ass and currently there are two comment resources installed which is so far from ideal it is not funny.

I think I am about to have to start a project to have two plugins built one for K2 activity stream integration and another to integrate Jomcommets and K2.

As a third gripe both K2 and Jomsocials support stinks to high heaven

As a fourth gripe I still cannot get anyone to give any idea on the problem with Rokcandy and the K2 front end editor even after multiple asks of K2 and RT both are just ignoring the issue also extremely frustrating

Edit: Rokcandy has been updated and now works with K2 front end editor, although this is great although a one line update saying yes we know and are working on it would have been nice on my post about the issue and many other peoples post about the issue.

    • HI Emma,

My main issues with MyBlog dealt with trying to implement in a multi-user scenario. The following are the complaints submitted to Azrul:

      1) All content has to be in one category by mandate 'MyBlog'. If I want 10 users with 10 different menu selections, I can change to a HTML and reference a long string that includes the user. Nothing is selectable in MyBlog component when assigning to a menu item.
      2) If I want to display different modules on each bloggers page I had to create hidden menus and then point external menus to hidden menus, assigning the modules to the non-hidden menus.
      3) If you publish the 'Latest Comments' blog on the front end you will see the latest comments for all blogs across the ONE category 'MyBlog'. There's now way to actually specify the blogs to pull the entries from. Not only that but as an added bug, if you click on any of them the entries won't link correctly into the correct user blog. It will randomly link into whatever comes first. As an example if Jane and Robert are both blogging on seperate pages, all entries when clicked will link to Janes page and Janes page will wrap the entries incorrectly.
      4) MyBlog has no user access (ACL) at all, so in a multi-blogging environment you get whatever is in Joomla. If you want a user to blog in a single category K2 allows this, Joomla of course does not.

There are just too many bugs in MyBlog for me and my clients to deal with. Having paid for (2) instances of MyBlog and JomComments, I'm abandoning them. Wish I could get my money back, so I could donate that to the K2 team.

K2 allows modules to be configured with granular details to include the category or categories. Additionally, I can specify user groups and allow very granular access for bloggers.

    • When you turned to K2 how are you addressing people having their own blog, for instance if a new member joins you would have to create a section or category just for fred? I am a big fan of K2 and we have it setup for publishers, authors and contributors all with different access levels what I personally am trying to avoid is when the site gets quite popular it would be a admin nightmare to have to manually create a specific category or section for John, Jack and Jill.
Or am I missing something I have not thought of?

    • I was |<--this-->| close to installing it on a new site I am working on, then noticed something:

K2 is calling all its js and css files (more than 50K worth) on every page, not just pages showing k2 content and k2 modules.

So if you use it to set up a 1-page blog, you add more than 50K to your homepage?!?

Maybe I missed a setting and will go back through it, but that's a showstopper....

    • 2) If I want to display different modules on each bloggers page I had to create hidden menus and then point external menus to hidden menus, assigning the modules to the non-hidden menus.

I am trying to reproduce this behavior, but I am unclear on what types of menu items you are using to create menu items that I can attach different modules to.

I'm stuck using MyBlog, and I need to be able to place different modules on different bloggers' pages.

      Help!

      Thanks :)
