After many months of preparing my site (with many thanks to the mods for all their help) it is nearly ready to go live .... I will be moving it to the required URL using JoomlaPack ... it will be replacing the outdated site that is currently on that domain.
My question is .... will seach engines be able to index the site if it is sitting there "offline" until I am allowed to go fully public with it?
I would like search engines to begin indexing (when I submit the sitemap etc ..) so it has a head start when it goes public?
I have searched the net looking for this answer .. with no luck!
Thanks for the reply Prim. I just couldn't find a definitive answer anywhere through my searching on the net.
I wasn't sure ... because when testing it .. I found that if I had the site set to "offline", and I typed in a known url for a particular menu item, even though it displays the offline page ... if I view the page source it actually displays the source of the "known url" not the offline page .. so I wasn't sure if the search engines would stil index it.
Web-crawlers look for links in-a-chain and follow links as far as they can go. If your site is "off-line" then the links wouldn't be active and thus, would not give them anything to follow.
