changing your .htaccess file?

  • changing your .htaccess file?

Posted 17 years 8 months ago
    • I need to make some changes to my htaccess.txt file, and ultimately in the end make it a .htaccess file. I read that this turns it into a hidden file however, and that you may not be able to access it again once you make the change. Does anyone know what I would need to do to access it again in case I make a mistake and need to change it?

      Thanks,
      David Henderson

    • You heard wrong :)

The .htaccess file will be just as visible as any other through your normal FTP software, cpanel file manager, or joomlaxplorer

    • Ah ok, then on I go with trying to SEF the site and to setup redirection to fix the domain.com and www.domain.com problems:)

      Thanks Gollum

    • I recommend Artio JoomSEF

works well, and provides clear instructions on how to set up your .htaccess file.

      Good luck :)

    • William - When/if you find a solution to the Artio SEF problem where the site appears when the www is in front of the domain name but doesn't appear without the www (or vice versa, as the case may be), please post!!! From what I've read this problem is irratic. I haven't yet found a solution, even though I've gotten every other aspect of the SEF to work. Frustrating!!

    • Hey Natalie, I've never even heard of that problem before, let alone had it myself. And I've used Artio on about 6 sites, through the various versions they've put out in the last few months.

Your problem really sounds strange... and scary.

    • Hi Gollum,
I posted about this question here: www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?t=7844&rb_v=viewtopic but no one responded. I ended up getting sidetracked with another issue, so just deactivated SEF on this site for now. (i.e., you won't see the problem from the links in my last post until/unless i reactivate the SEF).
Although the site was/is a test site anyway, I AM still concerned about this issue. I just ran out of steam and figured I would come back to it later. Any thoughts on what the problem may be??? Would appreciate your experience on it!!

      natalie

EDIT: I just reactivated the SEF... Compare diffloth.com/dgpi-joomla/ to www.diffloth.com/dgpi-joomla/ -- without the www works; with the www does not......! :(

      Hi,

Do you have the latest version installed (1.4) ?

What do you have set in your configuration.php (//www.diff OR //diff)?

Have you tried what's outlined in the following thread to redirect all requests to //www to the workin url?

      http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?t=8262&rb_v=viewtopic#p39602

      worth a try :)

That's what I was talking about when i said i needed to fix the www thing. I am planning on using artio, and hadn't even heard there was a problem. I planned on putting a redirect in my htaccess file because it is needed for my ssl to work right. However, if this also fixes the artio problem you have mentioned, then I'll be killing 2 birds with one stone:) Just have to watch out for the no cruelty to animals activists then!

      Thanks,

    • GollumX -
Thank you so much!!! I don't know why I didn't look in my configuration.php file, but that did it. You were right -- once I added the www there, then the www vs. non www issue resolved itself.

One small new annoyance has come up though... After I installed Artio SEF 1.4, all the page URLs started displaying the item number for the page at the end of the address. If you take off the item #, the page link still works, and the URL before the item # is correct -- i.e., SEF is working, or at least partially. This item # problem wasn't happening with the 1.33 version of Artio SEF... :/ Any clues?? Link: www.diffloth.com/dgpi-joomla/

      thanks again -
      natalie
