Switch from SMF to Joomlaboard

    • I just found this script that is supposed to be able to do the conversion from SMF to Joomlaboard over in the Joomla! forum. It seems to work for quite a few folks who have made the conversion. What do you guys think? Aside from making backups, anything I need to be aware of before starting this conversion?

The SMF forum we have only has 3386 Posts in 789 Topics by 48 Members so I'm hoping . . .

    • Update . . . I took the plunge this weekend and had no luck with the conversion. Since it was previously a JoomlaHack bridged SMF the user info was synchronized already but nothing else was converted. I'm sure the problems lie with my lack of experience with the something as technical and touchy as this. At the very least, I think I missed something and did some steps out of order. My community forum is small and the members aren't going to freak out anyways. Still have to go back to old forum and manually copy/paste some of the important topics.

The ultimate idea I am toying with is a Joomla! + CB + Joomlaboard + Gallery community . . . CB is the only variable left in this equation since I have no experience with it. But, I welcome anything that will make our gaming community feel more like that - a community.

      Hi David,

I have used CB a lot, but the earlier version didn't play well with SMF. The latest version is supposed to, although I haven't tested it yet.

Joomlaboad is a great component. I don't know about security for it, though. I've been hacked through Joomlaboard before and it was on the list of third party components that was a security risk. However, Jommlaboard is supposed to have fix that with the current version - I think it's vs 1.13 or greater.

    • I never have liked joomlaboard its easy to set up and use but its options are nill, and it's ugly. Customising the look of it was a hassle, which may have changed but Im not looking to waste time with it.

I found the users didnt like it either. No one could figure out how to use it because the buttons were completely differently placed than other forums, and were all text so it was hard to discern between text and the buttons it was literally poopty. once again may have changed (i think it was two years ago or older but it was aweful). The board was a bomb and i actually lost people to it when i went from PHPBB to JB it was like trading in my awkwardly large hummer (overkill) for a wheelbarrow with a flat tire(totally lacking basic needs).

Mind you it only took three minutes to set up but like most super easy things the ease came at a heafty price....options. But on a positive note if i needed somethign really lacking in options and hard to figure out for my users then joomlaboard would be the obvious choice.

Well i guess since im talking all this smack i might as well see what it's turned into these days. Since i doubt anyones going to download the version from two or three years-or-so-ago. Maybe they have redeemed themselves and made a board that doesnt date within its own family.

    • You can see the latest version (shows at bottom of forum) on one of my sites (hit the sig link). This is a basic install with some of the extra modules installed on the left. It is a bit spartan in appearance but I haven't looked 'under the hood' yet to see what it will take to spruce it up. You are right that it fills the role of a forum that doesn't need extra groups and their related settings. Joomlaboard has difficulty with those issues because it uses Joomla's inherent minimal group settings.

So far, it works fine for the needs for which it is installed that site - a low maintenance forum with low to medium use.

SMF does have a spell checker. Doesn't function here at RT... ;)
If you use IE there is a add-on called ieSpell
Firefox 2 now includes a built in spell checker.
