Does anyone have any suggestions for a SEO extension? I've looked at the ones over at extensions.joomla.org and I can't really decide which one would be best since I know very little about SEO. There are quite a few over there with great ratings so it makes the decision even harder. I don't mind paying for an extension, as long as it is worth it.
My site is going to have a lot of articles and since I am the only one managing the site, these two tools will save me a lot of time. Does anyone see an issue running both of them?
Not sure, but I think the two would be at odds with each other. iJoomla wants to manage the meta data (keywords, etc.) and a quick read of their forums said that sh404SEF (which has a meta management feature) needs to have that meta management feature disabled to have iJoomla's product work. I'm using sh404SEF to get nice short URLs, but I'm very interested in iJoomla's meta management.
FWIW, we at RocketTheme, use the standard Joomla 1.5 SEF stuff. This combined with careful menu and content management has proven very effective. We have found no need for a 3rd party solution.
I'm with Andy; well, except I recently started using 'TagMeta' to inject page descriptions/keywords on pages that one typically couldn't enter these data...never use the global settings for meta descriptions and keywords, as it results it a TON of duplicates with Mr. Google, so TagMeta is a pretty lightweight solution to inject this information in the < head >.
I find all these URL rewriters to be quite dangerous, but perhaps that's a sign of my age.
Personally, I stay away from iJoomla because they use ioncube on most of their extensions which encodes certain files. If ioncube breaks or and update is done on your server and ioncube is not working, your site will break. It's another piece I don't want to have to worry about.
Remember, anytime you add an extension of any sort, it's another thing you have to worry about when it's time to upgrade.
It might be worth the time to copy the first sentence of each article to the meta description and hit save. It might not be a summary or exact description, but it's one that can show up in searches and gives an article intro.
As for SEO, if you're not an expert, I say stay away from the extra plugins and use Joomla's core. It's very tough to get a benefit out of those extensions if you aren't an expert. Like Andy said, careful planning of sections, categories, and menu items can do the job just fine.
