There's another thread on RT about a domain registrar that's big but has some sever problems and many folks have lost their domain as a result.
QUESTIONS: When you register a domain, who can you trust? Who's the safest company that you register with? Godaddy? Someone else? I'm about to register three domains and I want the best and safest.

- I personally use godaddy. They are cheap and reliable. I've got about 50 domains and never had a problem with them. Also they take paypal which is handy!

I was thinking godaddy. It's a lock, for sure! I'll do it now before someone snathes my domain. Thanks, man!

There were some horror stories about godaddy in the past, but if you read through them, you'll find the people were shady. Bottom line there, if you are flaky, flaky things happen. If you are 100% white hat, you never have any problems.
If you sign up at Enom, you can become your own reseller and sell domains to yourself. It just makes it easier to manage and you can "private domain" all of your whois info into 1 location. (Something Godaddy charges for) It just cuts down on some of the spam. Note: You still have to have valid info in the domain, by law.
If you want a real horror story, go to http://registerflies.com Thousands of people lost very valuable domain names to these scam artists who held domains and websites for ransom. ICANN just terminated the contract a few days ago. So be careful when selecting a registrar. Cheap isn't always better.

BTW, if you choose Private Registration, how does that effect you in search engines? Any effect there?

I use Godaddy and have been very happy. I agree however that if you intend to sell domains enom would be the place to go.
Bob Parsons, the owner of Godaddy, has a blog and wrote this awhile back. It found it to be really interesting about the games that go on behind the scenes.

It depends. Search on SEO and DNS and WHOIS. There is some debate on the value.
One thing to note though, if you sell stuff online. Would you buy something from a site that hides its DNS info? Or would you buy from a site that the DNS info is the same as the company contact info. If I buy stuff from a new site, it's one of the things I look at. I guess an average consumer wouldn't. People like us who run websites do. So if I was selling anything tech, I would publish the matching info.
Even though it's not legal in the US some people use DNS entries to build and sell mailing lists. This has become worse ever since they made it a law that there has to be valid contact information in the whois info. I get tons of spam, telemarketer calls, and junk mail that all come from the DNS info on a couple of my sites.
How do I know it comes from there? I use one of those post box services that includes a voicemail, mailing address, fax, and email. I use that only in my whois. It's still legal because I can be contacted. I did get a subpoena once through that info. I had to turn over private data from the site for a credit card fraud case (which I gladly did, friggin scumbag thieves). - Last Edit: 18 years 1 month ago by Mack.

I have experienced some pretty rotten crap in the past myself regarding some of my domains. If you own multiple domains in my opinion it is best to manage them yourself and avoid any potential for someone else to screw you up.
It's really not very hard to do.
The stories I have heard and been through with others would take the curl out of your hair! I usually spring for the extra bucks to I.D. protect my domains also. I believe it does cut down on the spam. If you ever have a domain you legally own held hostage by a scumbag registrar it would probably skew your perspective. I have heard quite a few stories regarding Netw*** Solut**** taking forever to transfer stuff or update nameservers on occasion. So it's not necessarily just the little guys you have to watch out for. That registerfly stuff is pretty hairy. I wonder how many lawsuits will result.......
