    Advertising

Posted 18 years 1 month ago
    • I'm considering some form of advertising to further promote my web design services, and I'm curious what sort of advice, experiences, horror stories, etc. other RocketThemers have had.

    • Running naked down the street with your URL written across your chest is not good.:-[

I found out too late that I should have wirtten it across my back... ;D

You have a few options depending on the type of audience.
      payper click ads
      seo on your site
      forum surfing
      article advertising
      joint ventures

What sort of clients are you trying attract?

    • Yeah, that is basically what I was already looking at, although I had a few other ideas as well.

I am looking to attract mostly small businesses and independent professionals, although the odd personal, family or hobby site would be fine too. I'm looking to increase my volume, and decrease the average complexity of each site.

Specifically, I was wondering if anyone had tried radio spots, or other "traditional" advertising? It seems like the Web is awash in cheap developers who are most likely outsourcing the sites anyway, and although I am not at all worried that my sites would fair poorly in the "Pepsi Challenge" with theirs, I am concerned about my message getting lost due to poor signal to noise ratio.

    • As long as you dont live within 10 miles of me you can read of my experiences.

Last year I took out a whole page A5 ad to go in the local Church magazine. Its a monthly publication with a circulation of about 4-500. The fee for the year was £57 roughly $112 US

It generated me £9k of new business (including a couple of calls asking whether I could set broadband up for senior citizen).

One client is a large company whose MD or CEO lived in the parish. I guess I am either an advertising guru or just got lucky. This year that one client has ordered another 6 sites.

Basically in my opinion you need a permanent place so that when someone needs you they think "didnt I see an advert on the back of the parish magazine" and then go to their most recent copy which may be lying in the cat tray soaked in urine.

I decided that the AD feel would be personal. No slick metallic corners making me out to be an international corporation. I just said Hi- I'm good at what I do. Live locally and would like to build your website.

I dont use photos of slim people in business suits shaking hands on my site. Everyone seems to do that and I look like a scruffy short a%%ed penguin.

    • Thanks Nick!

I'm nowhere near you, so no worries! :D

I like the small publication idea, and I hear you about not putting skinny people in suits up. One of my main goals in all of this is to try to distinguish myself from every other Web company out there that offers the same TemplateMon$ter based sites, and outsources the work anyway. And, while doing that, I need to be careful not to price myself out of my target audience's budget.

I need to do more work on my site, too. I feel like the mechanic, too busy fixing other people's cars to worry about my own!
