    How much should i charge?

Posted 15 years 1 month ago
    • Hi,
I'm doing a Seo service for a client, but i'm finding difficult to find a price for my services. The website is an e-shop,with about 500 products related to an especific niche.
So,the service would be detailed kw research for a set of kw,creation of about 40 categories(optimized pages),edit products pages(500 +-) to fit the especific niche, creation of robots.txt, creation of .htaccess with canonical and other redirections, activation of mod_rewrite(SEF).The creation of an structured internal linking(external link building is not include).
I know that different people charges different prices, but i would like your opinion about this espefic service.

    • This is not a solution, but some gerneral thoughts on the subject...

It's hard to say what each specific is worth or what you should charge for each.

How long will it take and how much is your time worth?

There are a lot of threads about this one in particular I remember:

      www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=21...harge&rb_v=viewtopic

Not so long ago, I was asked to work on a site for Mr. B by Mr. A.

Mr. A didn't have all the details, but from what I was told, it seemed quite possible.

      'He needs features A, B, & C'.

      OK, no problem, that's possible.

      I meet Mr. B and he tell me 'In addition to A, B, & C, I need D, E & F'.

'D, E & F' were possible but fell outside of the Joomla core and would require custom coding to get everything to work.

I told him as I'm not a coder, it will take me time to do (which you will be billed for) it or I'll need to outsource it (which may be cheaper in the long run because a coder will be able to do the work faster).

Since what you are planning to do is nothing I've done before, I can't suggest a price, but to sum it up; how much is your time worth, how long will it take, and will you have to outsource to get it done.

In any case, don't sell yourself short just to get or keep a client, your time and skill are a valuable commodity.

    • Thanks for the help,
But the thing is i do not know how much time will take. The problem is that he payed already £400 in advance for a BASIC service and now he wants ADVANCED,targetting the niche kw also.I'm trying to talk to him by phone and he doesn't answer,i wrote emails and he does not answer ,explaining that it will cost more(didn't agree how much).
I think he is pretting I continue the job without paying me,for the fact he payed £ 400 already.I would like to refund him,if it was the case, but i spend countless hours doing kw research and much more,i was doing a consultory job,as i have to find the REAL niche for his products.
So,yeah.I hope he contact me and i finish this job. But,honestly,i won't work for free.
Anyone that has SEO exp and could estimate +- this service for me would be apreciated
      Thanks :)

    • Stick with the basic and finish.
Then, Advanced is a new job.
You have a good idea of all that is necessary for proper SEO. It is a lot of work, especially when you have to research the products.
To get an idea of how long it might take, research for 5 products, from start to finish. As you do it, write down what you are doing, so you have something to follow later.
From those 5 products, you should get a rough estimate of time for each product.

Now, multiply that by number of products.
It will be a large number when there are 500+ products, and when the client gets over the sticker shock, you can show them the process you took to get that estimate, how you had to do the research for each, etc.
If they still complain, simply say "Sorry. If you find someone that can do it *properly* for less, please let me know so I can use them for some other projects."
Or, if the client can do the research themselves and give you just the results, it would cut down your time.

In this particular case, with them being hard to contact, I would probably not want to work with them, and would finish the Basic service and cut them loose.

      Brian, great advice...

Give him exactly what he signed up for and paid for in the first place. Point out that you have met the obligations of the first agreement, but it's finished. If they want more, it will cost more.
