Yootheme touting faster templates than RT....

Posted 17 years 3 months ago
    • I tried to link a Yootheme graph but it won't link.

Basically, they're showing a graph over there that compares the CSS/JS file size/# of requests of Yootheme's latest template to RT and JA's latest offerings. I don't have to tell you which one looks better according to Yootheme.

RT, I'd like to hear your comments on this please. How do RT's templates stack up speedwise and can anything be done to improve them?

      Thanks.

    • Saw that.. and they pick our biggest, most feature packed template we've ever done to compare - mediamogul. Not to mention the fact that the abundance of module positions requires a bunch of css files. MediaMogul is not intended to be the ultimate in lightweight fast loading designs like youtheme's template they were promoting. It's like comparing a lightweight and fast Lotus Elise that is built for speed but has no comfort features to a rolls royce that has every feature imaginable :)

That said, the yahoo best practices for speed optimizing a design have some validity, although gzipping all files can just increase the load on the server while providing limited performance benefits. Also the browser's built in caching abilities for js and css are mitigated when you use a gzip technique to bundle files together. I'll continue to look into it more, and we do strive to break out css files and keep our code as clean and lean as possible. I think you'll find that RocketTheme templates are on the whole faster rendering in your browser than others around.

    • YooTheme's Beyond that they are comparing, has very little to it when you take out the modules that are in the demo. In the comparison chart they say they are comparing it WITHOUT the extensions.

Depending on what kind of site I'm building, I like having a selection of both sparse, lightweight templates and feature-rich templates.

EquinoxEssentials is great for all-purpose template that doesn't overpower the content. Then there are some clients who ask for a "visually stimulating" design. I would not expect the latter to load as fast as the former.

    • And doesen't those Yootheme templates also get dependent on being used on a server environment where gzip is enabled/possible?

Not all server environments are set for allowing it...i think lol...

    • It should also be noted that after a person has completed customization of an RT based site, it is certainly possible to combine CSS files (and even JS files).

Basically, the template has to be modular to allow the different styles, and allow people to turn features on and off, but for a finalized site, this modularity is no longer required. If one really wants to get the number of file requests down, go ahead and start joining them together. There are tools to automate this, btw, and in addition to reducing the number of files, some additional savings in CSS will be realized by reducing redundancy.

    • So.... why is Youtheme concerned about RT at all?
      A very strange business philosophy...

Btw, which club has more templates and more members, hmm?

    • I've tried some other template clubs when I needed something for a client that was quite different from what was available at RT, and I find RT's templates and sliced png's much easier to customize.

usually people especially in business are concerned with other's work when they feel that their competitors are better ;)

and it's not a matter of who has the more templates or more members, it's a matter of who gives you what is best for YOU. I can't compare the other template clubs as I have never been a member to one besides rockettheme. Even though I can't renew my subscription at the end of the month with rockettheme, when I will be able financially to do it again, it will be Rockettheme. And the reason is that Rockettheme serves my needs, they have an excellent support, and one thing that I will miss with my subscription expiration will be their support forums. I might have not been talking a lot as to most of my questions there was already an answer and when I needed help I was 10000% happy with their help.

I am sure the majority of the rockettheme's "customers" feel the same, and I guess if you have a business your best payment is to have your customers happy. After all, there is NOT a better advertisment than a happy customer ::)

    • LMAO... nice try Yootheme.

Yootheme templates aren't all bad... but if they're going to start beating down other developers in order to look better themselves, I'll soon boycott their products.

I know you're reading this Yootheme. Take note!
