That RokSlide is what I've been comparing your problem to. As you can see, it contains mainly images and links with a little text. But it's been done with custom HTML modules - what I can't understand is the problem you're having with the Newsflash module. It is exactly what you need to be doing - and should solve all of your problems in one fell swoop.
I'd try it again, and concentrate on playing with your publishing settings to get it working right. Make sure your server timezone offset is set correctly so that your Joomla site will publish things according to YOUR timetable. Perhaps try the newsflash module with an article in the same category that you KNOW is published (ie, temporarily publish the article to a test area on your site AND publish it in newsflash to see the problem you described earlier is caused by the article being set to 'pending' rather than 'published'). - Ragdata's Rubber Duck

With the newsflash module, it wouldn't load the items - it was just a flat blank "thing". It seems to me that when I went in to css the height was automatic depending on the type of content, but I'll go look again, maybe it's an issue with the module's height.
I'll try your ideas and let you know what happened. I'll have to do it tomorrow, though, I'm a little nackered after spending all day working on February's lineup and March's too. (I am creating posters for items that I can't find posters for, and that's fun because I have NO idea of how to use my paintshop program so I'm mostly using Paint. lol!)
