As a warning: please do not use YAHOO! SmallBusiness hosting! This is my first Joomla site (I used Yahoo! for another client and went great) but it is not suitable for Joomla as the PHP support is poor, no .htaccess, etc.. - and they are quite resistant to upgrade anything. As a plus, their support is good and they did refund my money quickly. :)

I think I may try host gator as others recommend but am looking at cloud based solutions as well. Quick thanks to everyone who is posting here though - will post what I come up with later.

      Cheers,

You'll be happy with Host Gator if you give them a shot, with the smallest plan and only $60 a year, you can hardly go wrong, and you can upgrade you account when you need to.

Even their best shared hosting is less than $150 a year.

    • I'm using hostgator for almost all my clients. Very good service (chat+ticket) - smooth service, good website speeds. 100% recommended. Running joomla and wordpress installs.

    • I have been using a shared Hostgator reseller account for the past 4 years and have been very happy with their products and services. Unfortunately I had to use another reseller account for FFmpeg or video sharing sites as hostgator does not allow for FFmpeg to be installed on their shared servers.

I have since upgraded to one of their VPS accounts, and can now install any software to suit my needs.

ps: Their customer support is excellent! I usually get a message back within 10min..

And it's just amazing how fast the live chat is... 'You are #26 in the queue... you are #12... you are #3... Hello, how can I help you today... '

    • Thanks for posting this information. I have been searching for a new hosting company for some time - I have now moved to Hostgator. I do have a question though. My domain name appears to be registered through Tucows and is up for renewal in a few days time and is currently being managed by my old hosting company (easyCGI). In the easyCGI control panel I have the option to set the contact info, auto-renew, switch auto-renew off... should I let it auto-renew or tranfer the domain to Hostgator?

      Thanks in advance...

    • I own a ton of domains and sites, and manage clients as well, so cost is important to me so I use Godaddy for domains and Hostgator for hosting. Cheers!

I moved my domains a while ago from my old host to Host Gator a while ago but it's been a while so I can't give you an answer off the top of my head... you'll have to contact your current host or Host Gator for instructions.

From what I recall it was pretty painless and I did it right after they auto renewed...

BTW, HG registers their domains through Tucows also.

    • Thanks for the responses! I will likely move the domain to HG as well.

    • Host Gator is good for U.S. sites. However, it won't be as quick for Europe (and elsewhere). I was chatting with HG tech support and he told me that they have started setting up dedicated servers in London and plan to open up VPS and Shared there in the near future as well.

In the meantime, for English based UK hosting, I think 5quidhost.co.uk is the best by far. I've used around 20 hosts in the past six months and I'd choose them for Europe and HG for North America. They do actually use a US datacenter as well, so give them a try if you aren't using HG.

    • I was HG client for more than 4 years, lots of sites hosted in different resseller accounts.
Theyr support is the best you can get.

Just have some glitches regarding resources usage but you shoulndt expect to host medium (+2000 visits a day) trafic sites in there.

I had to move to Europe and got a VPS, but now i see it was a mistake, i should sitck with HG and get a VPS from them.

      You cant beat their support/price
