    • Isn't RokBridge a GPL project?
If you could get donations like this for your GPL project would you say no to the food money to feed the developers when there was this much interest in the project?

I look at the "total" as a reference number for the widget and nothing more. If I was on the receiving end of this I would be more motivated to work faster and longer to get it done as I saw the numbers grow. The widget lets you see how much was donated. I would be a happy coder.

Think about this...most sites don't tell you how much people have given. I don't think what Andy did here was underhanded or anything of the sort. He saw a neat idea and made it work for the betterment of the GPL project.

I am looking forward to this extension.

    • Doesn't bother me a bit.

Face the reality of it. The dev has bills to pay. Making the bridge takes time. Billable time. Time that could be spent working on client sites and projects.

Andy was pretty up front about it. They needed a little $$$ so time could be allocated to the project, and a few people can chip in to help with it, don't really see an issue there.

He asked for donations, and people responded. That's the difference a community can make. If you have a problem with it, don't donate, move on. No reason for bashing.

    • I fully support any sort of incentive, monetary or otherwise. In fact, if money was ever an issue, they should have done this months ago and gotten the bridge stable by now.

I've just presented them with what I believe are better options. Rather then messing around with $2500 in donations, the model I suggested could pay Johan $4K/mnth, and another four devs to provide support on the RW forum.... we'd have a GPL bridge with commercial level support.

Mack, Joseph, I fully applaud your views and wish more people felt the same.

The problem is that maybe 1 out of 100 people, if that, will donate, whereas with the alternatives I've suggested, or other methods, Johan could be thanked (read:compensated) in a much bigger way while the end user still gets a free of cost, gpl bridge.

Wouldn't you want Johan to get more? Wouldn't you like RW to be able to provide a dedicated dev to answer questions and fix things asked on the RW forum?

Joseph, you're right.. there's nothing underhanded about it. I'll edit the word I used in my first post.

    • I bumped it up to $2500 goal as the response so far has been so great!

I think something needed to be done (Bridge) soon and Andy had the ability to grease the wheels and he did. Raising it was the only thing I found odd, but whatever it takes.

I'd pay my devs more then enough so that they would never need to ask for donations... after all, I have heaps of money, and this project is going to get me heaps more.

I just don't understand what some people hate so so much about earning money. Eg. If a single small 120 x 120px ad was put on the Joomla home page, at least one of the Joomla core team could have quit their day jobs and spent the time on Joomla instead... perhaps we'd be at Joomla 1.6 or Joomla 2.0 by now.

Instead, they reject that and hold back development instead.

See the Magento project and how much they've gotten done in such a very very short period of time. It's taken them less then a year to be better then 10yr old open source commerce carts. How? They have well paid full time developers.

RW is backed by RT, a commercial company. If the commercial company can't afford to pay the devs more, create partnerships, get more backers on board. My calculations tell me though, that RT has more then enough funds to fund RokBridge, Jfusion, and a heap of other projects and still rake in gigantic profits.

    • At the risk of getting banned from this board I will say no more here. The moderators and staff are free to remove my posts. I hate when that happens at J.org, but RT is a privately owned forum and I don't mind being edited/deleted.

Apart from the issues I have against this minor issue, I am grateful to the developers of RokBridge for creating what will probably be a great product. Thank you also for making it GPL. That alone almost invalidates my earlier comments here because I could grab it myself, hire my own developers, and get it done faster if I wanted to and had the funds to. I just wish RT would do this instead... it just makes so much more sense to me for it to be done that way.

Apologies for any offense I caused.

    • Rokettheme has already paid substantially for the development of the bridge, development was still continuing but at a reduced pace. We were originally going to try to do a club thing or something for the bridge, but in the end decided it would be completely free to all. That said, we started a lot getting a lot of attention over it, of demands, and people fuming because it was not finished, bugs existed etc. The chipin is voluntary and is purely an incentive to make development happen a bit faster, because lets face it, open source developers have to pay bills too. I think its a great communal way for people who will be benefiting from the bridge to help out to get it done. We certainly won't be benefiting monetarily from it.
