Could someone please explain to me why the need for both? Feel silly asking ask it's probably some VERY simple explanation, but I haven't found it on here.

Hey Michelle,
There are two different versions of the templates because there are two different versions of Joomla being actively supported. 1.5 is the most recent release and will receive additional features, in addition to bug fixes and security patches. 1.0 is a legacy version and is only slated to receive bug fixes and security patches. RocketTheme will effectively end development of 1.0 templates after the DEC08 template. However, we will continue to support all RT 1.0 templates well into the future. Thanks for the fast reply. In your opinion, is one more secure than another? Is the UI different? I've always used 1.5 so I'm not sure.
I'm actually taking over a Joomla job and the client had a custom site built in 1.0. I have thought about upgrading as the UI is weird on this (is it because it's 1.0?). Would this be advisable? Would it be difficult to do this?

Yes, the UI is different because it's a older version. Migrating the site can be difficult depending upon the components and plugins that the site uses. There is an upgrade package designed for a 1.0 -> 1.5 conversion. It takes care of all the articles/users/settings/etc.
Remember that this is a migration requiring a fresh install and a separate database for the new site, so get ready to have two installs and having to move one of them. For the core Joomla stuff, it's not as daunting as it sounds, but still always make full backups!!!
