I am building a new template for a client using the basic Gantry 4 framework and I am just putting the basics in place, but I am not having any joy when it comes to the custom 404 page.
There's nothing of real consequence there yet. However, if you purposefully try to force an error page display, let's say by going to
sosdivorce.dyndns.org/blahblah
you just see the default 404 Not Found page, and not even the Joomla standard 404 page.
Can someone help me?
I'd be happy to provide my admin username and password if needed.
Basic Installation information:
Joomla 2.5.7
Mission Control 2.6
Gantry Framework and Default Template 4.0.5
Latest versions of Rok Nav Menu.
Akeeba Admin Pro & Backup Pro
PHP 5.4.7
MySQL 5.5.27
Apache 2.2.22
For this to work you need to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess and enable url re-writing in global options.

Thanks for the reply, but that isn't the cause of the issue since URL rewriting is on and I have a .htaccess file that is generated by akeeba admin pro. So, something else is causing the problem for me.
mod_rewrite is enabled in php, so that isn't the issue either.
If you wish, I can provide you with super admin access.
Please would you PM superuser id and pswd and i'll have a look for you.

Ok I just tried a clean install of Gantry 4 and it all worked fine. Looking at your site things are a little more complex and we need to eliminate a few things.
1. You're using php 5.4.7 - This is very new (just an observation for now)
2. You're using Admin tools pro which overwrites the standard joomla htaccess file - so I'd like to eliminate this having you temporarily uninstall akeeba admin pro tools and put back the standard joomla .htaccess file.
3. You're using dyndns rather than a real domain name which does causes issues from time-to-time.
4. have you set any error page handling in your hosting set-up (plesk/cpanel?) make sure this if off.
Let start with Admin tools pro - can you uninstall and put back the standard joomla htaccess.
Regards, Mark.

1. Yes, 5.4.7 is very new. I like living on the cutting edge! LOL. Actually, this is my local machine, and herein I answer your 3rd point as well, in that I am using dyndns to allow simplified access to my local machine. It's the first step of my development workflow where I get the basic site structure up and running before uploading to a remote dev server. Also, it simplifies my life to have sublime-text projects and use codebox for less/sass/scss/haml compiling.
2. Yes, I am using admin tools pro. I will rename the .htaccess file it created to htaccess.adminpro and then rename the default Joomla htaccess.txt to .htaccess. Or do you want me to fully uninstall the Akeeba AT Pro?
4. (skipping 3 as I replied above) Well, since this is my local machine, there is no plesk or cpanel. I have not enabled any custom error files within apache or elsewhere.
Anyway, in a PM, I already provided you with ssh access to my machine, as well as the site root path.
The above change to .htaccess as requested is done. But let me know if you need me to uninstall or disable Akeeba AT Pro.
Any chance you could help me solve this issue further? As per your request, I have reset the .htaccess file generated by Akeeba Admin Tools Pro and replaced it with the default Joomla .htaccess file. Nothing has changed. I still can't get the custom 404 error page (or any error page other than the default server error page) from loading.
I'm asking some of the other MODS to look too. What happens is you miss out the dyndns domain and just do "localhost" does that give you the same?
Regards, Mark.
