- fixed it now thanks...it was a mod called nice_social_plugin or something similar that was causing the error

The Gantry framework is the best thing joomla templates have seen, slow loading or not.

Wow!
Google Chrome loads the backend sooooo much faster than IE or Firefox! I enabled the gzip in joomla and in gantry...took load times down to less than 8 seconds...I can live with that! Thanks for the suggestion to switch to Chrome...I am now in love with this browser!!!
