I have enabled cURL now by adding "extension = curl.so" into a php.ini file which I have placed in the joomla/templates/rt_panacea_j15 directory.
I verified that cURL is now indeed supported in the Help/System Info/PHP Information:

- Hello Dan, It seems your server doesn't include the support for JSON. Please install and configure the JSON package in your server, then restart the apache. After that, in your Joomla backend, Help -> System Info, please ensure you have the JSON enabled shown like the following screenshot. The version might be different.
