thanks jem for the details.
looking at your setup, i can't see anything wrong with the server settings etc.
like you mentioned, i am now almost certain that this is an upgrade failure of joomla.
unless you get any solution from the joomla core peeps, probably best to start rebuilding the site in joomla 2.5.1, that's exactly what we have found the most reliable way for rebuilding our j1.5 rocketlaunchers in j2.5.
if you have a backup of your original site, you may revert back though and try the upgrade again, maybe you're lucky.

- hi again kat - installing it manually doesn't work either because now i'm having a "connect to database error" issue and yet everything seems correct there too - this is way too problematic for me - is there any reason why i can't just use J1.7.5 for now? thank steve
