SOLVED Show blog template when someone clicks on article link

Posted 9 years 1 week ago
    • I'm using Joomla 3.5.1 K2 Categories Gantry 5

I'm trying to have my blog template for when someone clicks on the blog menu item. jim-sharp.com/index.php/resources/blog

When someone clicks on an article, the template will change so it shows related items etc on the right column. I created another version of the template... used a hidden menu item which I published to K2 Category for my blog. It was working fine, now when I click on an article from the blog page, it is going back to the homepage which is a huge problem. jim-sharp.com/index.php/resources/blog

There is a better way, as of Gantry 5.2.17, to hide menu items. Let's say you have a parent menu item called "Blog" and have about a dozen items that you want to be shown on your "Blog" menu -> assigned a "Blog" Outline.

I used to use the Hidden Menu technique but there is a better way now

Create your menu items and assign them to your "Blog" parent menu item. Make sure the links work. Then in the "Blog" Outline go to the MENU button in the upper right of the Outline. Click the child indicator and you will see all your child items appear. For each item you are now allowed to disable the display of the menu item. So when a user clicks a content link for a child item of the "Blog" parent menu item the actual item doesn't display but Joomla will route the user to the proper "Blog" Outline.

Sounds like the right approach... and it WAS working? What changed?

I haven't used K2 in a while... but it's the same for Joomla articles... you need a Menu Item associated to the article for it to route properly and the easiest way is creating a hidden menu with a single Category Blog Layout item pointed at the Category... then, you assing your G5 template to that hidden menu item and it will propogate to articles within that category as long as you don't have another Outline specifically assigned to individual articles

    • Dan's tip sounds like a good approach too... and since K2 items may route differently than Joomla articles it may be the better approach as well ;)

    • It's odd. I deleted a module off the blog outline and it stopped working. I checked again, it was working. Now It's not working again. Keeps going back to the home page.

    • Create your menu items and assign them to your "Blog" parent menu item. I have a menu pointing to a G5 cutom page. You say create item(s)? jim-sharp.com/index.php/resources/blog

Make sure the links work. ?

Then in the "Blog" Outline go to the MENU button in the upper right of the Outline. Is this the Menu Editor?

Click the child indicator and you will see all your child items appear. For each item you are now allowed to disable the display of the menu item. So when a user clicks a content link for a child item of the "Blog" parent menu item the actual item doesn't display but Joomla will route the user to the proper "Blog" Outline.

This is all working with my products, but can't seem to figure this out.

    • I think G5 Custom Page as your menu item is the issue... that's not going to propagate to the child items... can you switch that Menu Item type to K2's equivalent of the Category Blog Layout?

    • Hi Matt,

Thanks, I deleted the custom page and went with the hidden menu option.

I didn't understand how to do Dan's method, but would be interested.

      Jim
