Main Body not expanding

  • Main Body not expanding

    • Hello,

Just installed the Gantry framework and set the Main Body to 3 columns (Sidebar a - main body - sidebar b).

I published the Main Menu in sidebar a on the left side of the screen and the Login module in sidebar b on the right side of the screen.

Then I added a single article and a new menu item named Courses. Both modules were enabled for both the Home page and the Courses page. Each page worked OK.

Then I unpublished the Login module on the Courses page and it just left a space rather than the Main body expanding to fill the space.

I thought it would expand automatically when a module was removed.

Is there something I need to do to set this feature up?

      Any assistance would be appreciated.

      Kind regards,
      Robin

    • Hello Kat,

Sorry, I have installed the Gantry Framework on my local machine - this is where I build all my websites. Once complete, I move them to the hosting provider online.

      Kind regards,
      Robin

    • hi robin,

normally the mainbody should expand if there are no modules published to the sidebar.
not sure why it does not work on your site.

once you have uploaded the site to a live server, you can still keep it offline and send me login details to access it. maybe i can find the reason for the problem you have.

    • Hello Kat,

I downloaded the rt_gantry_j15-2.5.5-rocketlauncher.zip file and installed that version with the content to see if I could find anything different between the two. As far as I can see they are set up the same way.

However, when playing around with the Rocketlauncher version, I unpublished the Want to Know More? module in sidebar b the home page and the main menu module that was in sidebar a moved to the sidebar b position on the right side of the screen.

Is there some way to keep the menu in sidebar a, it's original position, and just have the content expand to fill the space. The menu jumping around (on it's own) to a new position on the other side of the screen can't be a good thing. If we position a menu in sidebar a that is probably where we want it to be for the entire site.

I haven't bothered to unpublish any other modules yet to test what happens, because if I can't control where the menu is positioned then the gantry system would be a waste of time for me.

      Kind regards,
      Robin

    • Hi Robin

I dont think you are quite understand whats going on. When you unpublish the the stuff in sidebar-a the layout becomes a 2 column layout since there is nothing in sidebar-a. So if you still have stuff in sidebar-b it becomes the first sidebar.

The basic thing is that when you select 3 above the slider you are setting the layout for 3 cols and when you select 2 above the slider you are setting it when it is 2 columns, not forcing it to 2 or 3 columns.

This is because the number columns is really driven by what you have published in a particular section of the site.

    • Hello Brian,

      Thanks for your response.

I do understand that if you start with a 3 column layout (Sidebar a - main body - sidebar b) and you unpublish the sidebar b module that the main body content should expand to fill the space - on the right - where sidebar b was.

My original post was about the fact that the main body did not expand when I unpublished sidebar b, instead, there was a blank space where sidebar b was.

I also downloaded the Rocketlauncher version to see if I could work out what was wrong.

I unpublished the Want to Know More? module in sidebar b on the home page and the main menu module that was in sidebar a moved to the sidebar b position on the right side of the screen and the main body moved to the left side of the screen.

My question is, how do I keep the menu on the left side of the screen in sidebar a for every page on the site?

I have also noticed that in every new template featuring the Gantry framework (except for Dominion), the menu is on the right side of the screen.

Is there a problem placing the menu on the left side of the screen in the later versions of Gantry?

      Kind regards,
      Robin

      hi robin,

there is no problem, you can use the layout sliders for the mainbody to tell the sidebars if they have to appear to the left or right of the mainbody.

    • I have a similar problem. I have 3 positions 3|6|3
      sidebarA - mainbody - sidebarB
This means that sidebarA should be ALWAYS to the left, but when there are no published modules in sidebarB, sidebarA will go to the right of the mainbody.
I don't think this is suposed to happen.
