    How to get started

Posted 18 years 11 months ago
    • I just replied to a PM with this info, but it might be useful to others:

Ok, so you just downloaded a template and you want to start modifying it, but don't really know where to start, let's try to shed some light on the process.

Each template is a bit different so there is no one answer to the question, where can I change the logo for example.  A lot of the knowledge just comes from experience doing these kinds of things  so you just have to prepare yourself and understand that this is not a trivial endeavor and it will take time to learn.

Modifying a template is a balancing act between editing images, editing html, and editing css.  You have to learn which bit does what.  There's no golden rule for this, it's just experience and experimentation that will provide you the answers.

      Here are some tips:

      1) open the template locally and look in the images folder.  Turn on thumbnails or something so you can get an idea of the images that make up the template.  If you intend to change something that is contained in an image, you need to open up the source PNG in firweorks and get to work editing it.

      2) if its not an image, and it's a font color or some other html element, you can use a tool like Firefox's web developer tools , to determine exactly what html/css element it is and then you can locate that in the html/css portion of the template file and make your modifications.

If you are going to be doing extensive changes like this i suggest you either intall a LAMP stack (apache/mysql/php) locally on your machine and develop there ( apachefriends.org - windows, mamp.info - mac) or use an FTP client that can remote edit and work on your remote machine that way.  If you have permissions problems you can try to resolve them with joomlaXplorer .  Your not going to get far trying to work inside of cpanel.

      good luck

    • ;D Great Idea offering a STARTING point for newbies.

I went looking (and I appologies if I missed it elsewhere) for a SMF "how to get started" entry.

I've not installed SMF with the Joomla Bridge yet... and would like to before I purchase a SMF club membership. If this information is not elsewhere in the forums... might you or someone knowledgable offer a primer on this subject??

Thanks as always for the wonderful work presented and shared here at RocketTheme.

    • Is there a specific description of how to change the colors on the new Mobius template (nothing original, just the modifications it comes with)? I just dowloaded it, but I am new at this and am not sure where to go now. Any suggestions would be great.

    • I'm curious about what to do with the extra files with some templates- if I try to install them via the template manager, Joomla gives me an error.

      Which template Christopher?

Most come with the source files which you can edit and use to replace logos and other graphics.

    • Several of the templates- Colormatic is one that has 4 files. One has fonts, but I don't see anything in Joomla for installing fonts.

    • ColorMatic Template - That file is the template that you installed

ColorMatic Source PNGs - that is the image files you can edit (only would upload to replace another image)

ColorMatic Font - Once downloaded and unzipped you would put this on your computer.

      Start button---->Settings
      >Contol Panel
      >Fonts
      > place the font file in here

ColorMatic Modules & Bots - once unzipped you can install the modules and the bots using Joomla

If you install the slimbox bot you will need to go to mambots in the admin section and turn it on

    • Ok, but I'm not sure how me installing a font on my PC would do anything for my site... wouldn't the visitor have to install it, too?
