Rocket Launcher on exisiting template

Hi i already have a template and Joomla with content isntalled.
I wanted to try out a RT Launcher so i made a new folder and uploaded it all, i then transfered over my original config files however i cannot still see the template that i had uploaded to take affect.. nor can i login but am returned with an error.
How can i resolve this?

The Rocket Launcher is for a clean install of Joomla with the template.
The process you described will not work.
(At least not without a ton of work which would be more difficult than applying a template to an existing site or using the RL on a clean install.)
Go back to the download section and download the TEMPLATE file for the version you have and apply the template to your existing install as you would any other component.
Extensions > Install / Uninstall > Browse (browse to the ZIPPED template folder) > Upload file and Install.
Extensions > Template Manager > make the new template the default > Save
Applying the template to an existing install, you'll need to download the template's extensions and install them, too.
You'll have to add them manually, and in some cases, create module positions for them. - Thanks,

I see, so what you are saying is if i use a Launcher i am stuck with it forever and cannot apply another launcher on top of it but only am able to apply and install template via Joomla?
I have another idea, what if i was to take out database tables from my existing template and dump it onto the new Launcher ive installed?
Our website has a lot of work can i not take tables out of the database which hold content and information from the defaul database sections such as articles, sections and menus and then dump them onto the Launcher database? Will this work do you think? Or does it mean.. anywhere you go.. if you use a Launcher then your stuck with it for life and you cannot use another launcher but are allowed to install templates via the interface. - Regards,

The Rocket Launcher is nothing more than a complete install of Joomla with the template and sample data files.
You're not 'stuck with it for life'.
If you already have an existing site, installed with the original package from joomla.org, or a previous install with the Rocket Launcher changing the template is as simple as uploading a new template as described and applying it through the back end in the Template Manager.
Just putting the Rocket Launcher files in a folder does not install the template, or Joomla for that matter.
To do what you are thinking of would require yo to at least create a new database and actually install Joomla.

You're not 'stuck with it for life'.

Cheers for that, however i am thinking long term. As you know over time things change including site designs etc. I understand that i can apply different templates to the Launcher and vice versa with a default joomla installation. As you say the Launcher is nothing more than a fresh installation.
But one of the main reasons why id prefer using a launcher is because it saves me time from having to do all the work myself. I was hoping if i install a Launcher i would be able to install another Launcher in a few months/years time (obviously that dosent work). Therefore i was hoping if i was able to take out some core database tables from the original site which was using a Launcher itself and then dumping it on a new Launcher that i had made earlier.
However i just tried this now and it did not work. I dropped some default tables from within the launcher leaving the launcher tables intact only.. and then i took the original tables from the original site which hold data onto the Launcher. This did not work. However instead of me dropping the tables i will try replacing them to see if it works.
Otherwise i will never be able to use a Launcher more than once on a particular site which like all sites we plan to develop and change in future... am i right... - Last Edit: 16 years 5 months ago by Kayz.

I can't quite catch what you're trying to say.
When you install Joomla with the package from joomla.org you install it once.
Once you install it and have an existing install, you don't install it again, ever.
If you want to make changes to the site, you modify the template or add another.
The Rocket Launcher is a Joomla installer with a template from this club, that's all.
You can't install it again, or install another on on top of it.
As far as the Rocket Launcher 'doing all the work' applying the template to an existing site isn't that much more difficult.
Once you apply the template, you have to organize the content to be in the correct Module positions, and maybe add a few extensions, but It's probably faster than rebuilding the site from scratch.

Yes thats right.. its not so difficulty to apply the modules, however it takes a lot of playing around with.. ive tried this once and not everything comes out fine and dandy.. as with some templates and launchers there are hard coded HTML sections which youd never know of without asking on the forum... its just the whole process is quite laborious. - Regards,

Previously, I had installed Replicant 1.5 via Rocket Launcher which worked beautifully; however, I just uploaded the Affinity 1.5 template and made it the default. I expected to see the menu structure and pages from Replicant translated into the Affinity template. Instead, I only have the top part of the first page and nothing else, no menu bar, no pages, graphics, etc.

In following JEM618's comments, I expected to be able to change the templates and have the content transfer seamlessly. I want to be able to use multiple templates. Hope I'm being clear.

Changing the Template, does not change the content. But each Template has it's own set of module positions which can be different and may be causing the problem you are seeing, along with default image sizes being different. Also, you may need to update some extensions to be able to take advantage of some of the features of the new template.
As a practice, I usually install a new template to a test site, and work out what content needs to be mapped differently in the new template, and what modules and parameters need to be updated to work with my content. As an example, Refraction uses Features1,2,3 modules where Affinity has Main1,2,3 - and their default presentation is very different.
You also can leave your default template set to Refraction, and then define Affinity to specific areas of your site as you work through the changes. But my preference is to set it up the new template on a duplicate test site, work through the changes and then make it (or copy it) the production site.
