Thanks for the reply, Tom. So, to be clear, templates are not really switchable vai the "default button" in the template manager because the modules and positions are different, therefore the site cannot be expected to displayed accurately.
Realistically, there can only be one template per site?? If I want other templates for the same site, I essentially have to forgo the current template and start from scratch with a another one by installing it, setting it up and incorporating the content. Is that correct?
I do understand what you're saying about remapping and changing modules and parameters, but to my thinking, I may as well ditch the current template and start over in every case since they can't be switched out anyway.
I think that some of us had the impression that one of the main features of Joomla was that you could make another template the default via the template manager and the site would transform seamlessly into the newly selected template. However, I certainly understand that is not feasible if the underlying structure of the other template(s) is not comparable.
In my case, I wanted to provide the management staff two possible designs of a site. What I am understanding is that I need two different sites, not two templates in one site. Right?
Thanks again for your response.

If you are looking to provide your management staff two possible designs of a site, then yes, you may be better served during the decision process to install two separate sites.
Assuming you already have an active site with content, and are looking to change the look and feel of it, then you could setup two sub-sites and populate them with your active site's content, add the template, and map the data to the template. This really isn't that hard, but you have to be aware of what default sizes are used in Showcase, etc.
I usually create a temporary site using Rocket Launcher and then work with the template to understand how it works, and what default sizes are involved, adjust Logo, etc. So if you don't have an active site with content to start off with, creating two sites with Rocket Launcher would be easier, and you could get each set up the way you like it. I usually don't modify the default styles very much before the desired template is selected.
This way your management could easily view the differences in the templates by going to the two sub-sites.
