Help. How do I stop this designer stealing my designs?

  • Help. How do I stop this designer stealing my designs?

Posted 16 years 1 month ago
    • Another designer has one of my designs up and is taking credit for it. I contacted him and asked him to please remove it from his portfolio and he refused. His logic is this: Since he designed a site for this domain name he can now take credit for anything ever posted there no matter if the site has changed hands or the re-designed by someone else *which is the case*.

He has a live feed from the websites and is linking to it. I wondered if there was a way I could block this or redirect it to a page that lets people know what he is doing.

I checked out the rest of his portfolio and noticed that there are at least three other sites there that are not his designs. I did contact the designers of those sites and they are just as aggravated about this as I am but I am at a loss as to what I can do about it.

      Any help is appreciated.

This is the portfolio of the designer in question. exmhosting.com/portfolio.php

If you click on one of the design examples you can see the click on the visit the site link at the bottom of the light box image you can see he has it opening in an iframe and he is using some sort of script to pull a live feed so that the images showing in the port are always current which is fine IF the site design belongs to you.

I asked him why not just put up a screen shot of the work that he did rather than doing this and he said that he had every right to do this and would not remove it.

      Any advice is appreciated.

      Thank you,
      Tina & Mark

    • Search for a script to add to your index.php that will break the page out of an iframe.

I can't give you specifics, but banks, medical companies, and other sites often add this code to their sites so users know they are browsing to a new site / domain.

    • Thank you JEM this does not keep the image of my site showing on the portfolio but at least now when someone clicks to go visit the site they will be redirected to a blog with information about how this company is misrepresenting themselves and claiming the work of others.

    • Send him a link to where his customers are being redirect to, I'm sure once he sees it he may consider removing your site which is the result your hoping for...

      Hope things work out.

    • I thought we had it worked out but in fact the site was redirecting anytime ANYONE visited the site even if they typed the url directly into the address bar so I am back to square one with trying to find a way to redirect traffic coming from his site.

We sent him a cease and desist letter this morning. We will see if this resolves the situation, if not I intend to contact his webhost, isp and search engines to report him.

I can't believe that he is not willing to simply put up a screen shot of the design that he did for the site rather than using a live feed and claiming the new site design as his own. He claims that this is a general practice for him and that some of the sites were ones that he worked on four or five years ago and who knows how many times those may have been redesigned. Personally I think he is full of it!

    • Jamesso I gave it a shot and its not working. Do I need to put it in a specific spot within the htaccess file? I just copied and pasted exactly what you provided above with the exception of changing the redirect url. Thank you for trying to help me.

    • I noticed that on his contact page he links to his Better Business Bureau rating page (along with some other gee-whiz badges).

You should follow the BBB link (and the others) and file a report on him. He currently has an A- rating which doesn't sound like it's deserved.

    • When did you rework the site? He is also stating that he redesgined these in the last year! More fuel to the BBB if you need it
