Basics are:
Build a good web page with good content. Don't try to cheat Google. Do a search on SEO in Google and near the top you will find a web page by Google read it and don't do anything they don't like.
Put a Google site map on your web page.
Then submit your web page to Google.
Good links from quality web pages to your web page (high page rank, related to the subject of your web page) helps a lot. Again do not try to cheat Google they will eventually catch you and you can kiss that domain and web page good by.
It works I have many web pages in the top 30 on Google for keyword searches. Be patient it takes time with tough keywords.

I'm not trying to cheat google or anything.
Its a website for a restaurant in a local area region so it should be easier I would guess.
I don't know is their a program that submits your sites to search engines automatically.

i wouldnt fall for the "submit you site to [instert outrageous number here] sites"
You only need to submit your site to 4 or 5 search engines. important are google, yahoo, and msn. Best to do so manually, not use a program... google can tell the difference, as you'll have to input a security code, something a robot cant do. You'll have between a week and a month before your site actually gets indexed and on the search engines.
Also search the web for directories and manually submit your website. - Say no to Internet Explorer 6.

Chris, just a tip for you. Create an alternative email address to submit your site. This is important because many directories will send spams to your email. After the automatical submission, wait few minutes, open your email and make the confirmation of your submission in several engines... turn to confirm the submission one day after (another several engines will send you confirmation emails after few hours).
Another important tip: don't submit automaticaly your site several times. Just one time is enough!
After that you must be patient
Add manually your site in several big SE like Yahoo! and DMOZ for example.
Make your site SE Friendly. Use OpenSEF for example, it's a great tool with a Google sitemaps function (you can create an xml sitemap of your site). Add this file to Google sitemaps.
Finally, make link exchanges with a lot of sites with good PR and with the subject related to your site. You can use a component like "linx" to do that.
It's a HARD work to have a good ranking in Google!!! Good luck!

Well, this matter is the eternal discussion in all forums about SEO... manual or automatic submission? Well, now my opinion is clear about it. Manual submission is necessary because you need a lot of good BL's to have a good position in the search engines... Also, you can't create a lot of BL every week or Google can put your site in the sand box. Personally I create more or less 20 BL/week, no more when I work on SEO... However, like I said in the post above, the automatical submission need to be made just one time. That's enought! A lot of people use a software or script like that to submit their site several times a day during weeks!!! And the submission is a spamming! Then, yes the engines (robots or people) can black listed the site or send it in the sand box.
The automatical submitter in my site is only to submit a site in several important engines and directories... I use it for all my sites since a long time, without any problem (just two times it was necessary to make a manual submission in GG). I never been black listed to do an automatical submission After that, it's necessary to search good directories on the web and add manually the site.
With one of my site I used the automatical submission to index this one in + or - 80 engines and directories and I added manually the site in 500 directories... and the SEO work is not finished :
Also, I create new contents all the time...
Like Raymond, I have many web pages in the top 30 on Google for keyword searches.
PS: Specially for french language sites, you can find a list with 1500 directories for free submission (no need to link back to them) in the site I'm building actually www.iatoo.net/liste-annuaires.html ; the list is slow loading

Right now I am using artiosef. The site is a Italian Restaurant its local does anyone know any good keywords for a Italian restaurant. Also when I check the meta tag it has

Also is it possible to get rid of this code and is it legal to get rid of it. I have no clue what its relation to my search engine rankings will do but if its a negative I would like to get rid of it if it is legal and possible. Also should I modify the robot.txt . One seo site told me that I should just spam my url everywhere I can like forums comments etc and bots will pick up my url and index it faster. I don't really understand what rss will do.

Just a couple of thoughts. Put in your meta tags as many pertinent keywords as you can. Make sure they really go with your site. Include the location, the type of restaurant, types of foods, anything else special and even owner names - anything people might consider when they search for this particular site. You need to think as if you are doing a search. You also need to think as not internet savvy people doing a search.
If there are other local sites that are likely to be well-ranked by Google - find out if there is anyway to get listed. Possibly a paid advertisement. But some may not require that. Does the owner have friends who will put links to his site? Maybe the newspapers' sites.
Another is to do a search of the local area in Google. There are tons of sites that lead to nowhere in someways - but would love links to anything locally. Not explaining this right. For example if I plug in my city and state - I get maineguide.com, city-data.com, hellometro.com, wunderground.com - and that is just Google page 1. So google clearly crawls these sites - and your listing might get bumped up by having these links in. Plus it might even bring in business.
While I am not saying this last one will work - I noticed that it helped me without intending it to. Showing your site in member sites here got a site onto Google pretty quick. Of course - the best part was getting good feedback and advice from the members here.
Another thing I thought of - if you have a site that Google spends a lot of time crawling - add some links to it. I would try to make them legitimate - like "here is my latest work." I took a web design course years back that was completely useless - and the teacher spent more time trying to show us how to scam search engines. I basically learned what not to do. So I never ever try to scam search engines because I read you can be penalized by search engines for it. (Not saying you are - just be careful by some advice you might find out on the internet on other non-RT sites that sound "wrong.") And definitely don't keep submitting your site to the same search engine.

Please be sure to always create a "spam" email address for signing up for things as was mentioned by Franck. I lost two of my favorite emails to spam long ago - now I use the one that is less "educational" for my sign-up email address.
Also - if appropriate - have a good links page. It must fit your site of course.
Good navigation and content, in my experience, are the keys to getting onto search engines. Your site can look great - but if the content isn't there - then no point. Also make use of "alt" tags. And be sure you don't substitute a graphic for important content. Be sure the important words are at the top of the home page.
The advice I gave is what I used to create html pages and watch things climb google to page one at rapid rates. I am not sure if it is the same for Joomla - but SEO was kind of weird hobby of mine a few years back. Now I am looking to keep sites more "private."
One other thing - even if you aren't using Syndicate - going into the component Syndicate and put in your site's info. Be sure to remove any extra joomla content that might have installed anywhere else - newsflashes, newsfeeds, etc.
