    • Hi MrBrightside,

I think those of us RT regulars know the value of the RT Templates and the club environment around them. I hope you could understand the slight defensiveness

I went to the WordPress site to get the gist of what you are talking about, but I couldn't find the demo page. Can you help?

About the RT Templates: I sort of look at them as clothes for my Joomla CMS. Andy and Kevin show you the possibilities, but you have to add the content. Like clothes, they must be measured and tailored and cut to the desired look and dimension. It does take a little work, but not a whole lot. If you get stumped on something, there's plenty of folks to step up and offer their help. Glad to see that you are taking David up on his offer. He's a very sharp guy and can benefit you greatly - as well as all the other guys and gals here.

I'd offer to help, but I'm as dumb as dirt - but I know who to ask! In a month or so you'll be slapping backs and glad-handing everyone and offering up help to the novices. You'll become a pod-person, just like us! ;D

David White got me off to a huge start with the Sparticus template just moments ago, so Im going to pick up where he left off this weekend and hopefully get comfortable with it enough to get my site done next week.

As for Wordpress, there are hundreds of templates at http://themes.wordpress.net/ and some other demos at http://blog-themes.kalinawebdesigns.com/wordpress-themes/wp-colors/ . Just download and start typing and your site looks like the demo. Any plugins for Google ads, recent comments, etc. you have to put in yourself just like with Joomla. There are hundreds of plugins at http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins and http://wp-plugins.net/ . WP is trying to make itself more like a CMS but they are a few iterations from even coming close. Still, its very easy to use. Hope that helps.

    • To be fair to Mr Brightside, he's not been the only one with this query, I've noticed some questions on the Sporticus forum with people saying that, when they install the template, it doesn't look like the demo. It's just a matter of figuring out how Joomla works and producing contect and modules. I wouldn't have the first idea how Wordpress operates if you asked me now (not that I'd pay for a template without finding out, but not everybody is me).

If you need any help getting your site up and running and looking like you want it to then fel free to give me a PM Mr Brightside, always happy to help if you need it. Play about with publishing and unpublishing some modules in different positions, see how they affect your site and it's look. Create some custom modules and content after this and you'll be up and away.

    • I hope Mr. Brightside is on his way to get the template looking as he had hoped for to begin with...

In my opinion it's a good idea to start using a forum by looking around and see what happens and the general tone. It is never smart to pretend you "know the basics" and then telling a club that you're disapointed with a product most members seems VERY happy with.

Apparently he didn't know the basics and that is fine by all means, but then ask like this next time and I'm sure this thread would have evolved in a much better way...

"Hello all... I am new to Joomla and recently just signed up due to the great templates I have seen in the demo section - especilally the Sporticus template... But to be honest I must be VERY new to Joomla since I have no clue how to make my personal site look anything like in the demo. Are there anyone who could point me in the right direction....?"

Voila - you get your help witout offending a very loyal and nice community :)

at the top of the sporticus template forum, in the stickies, are instructions on making it look like the demo to a degree. I used those and had mine looking pretty close to the gator sporticus variant in less than 2 days, so give it a shot.

      David Henderson

Im going to give it a shot this weekend, even though Im busy. Thanks for the inspiration.

Well if you have any problems, feel free to ask. Trust me, I'm no joomla expert, heck I still don't understand making menu items. There are like 25 choices to choose from before you even type in the name for the button!LOL Anyways, if you run into a dead end, ask me for help, I probably hit the same problem and found a way around it. You can even PM me if you feel like it's a dumb question:)

P.S. I am still working on the site in my spare time for my friend...but you can see what I got accomplished in a few hours of playing with it and after reading over the tutorial stickied on the sporticus forum. The site is http://thedooleygang.com I also got it so that when you login there is an acutal working media player embedded playing gator vision. On the front page for the public, it's just a picture of the player:)

Ha Ha Gollum - Nice try but I've seen your work, I should be asking you for help. Mr Brightside was lucky I had consumed too much coffee and was having a bad case of designers block, so it was a needed break for me to do something else :P

I am sure in time when he has Joomla sussed he will pay it forward to another member.

OK the surf is pumping at Raglan so I am off to do some real work (paddling and surfing)

      Hey GollumX,
I think I can help if you would change your mind to use Blanco2.0 instead... ;)
(oh, never mind, it's not officially released and no demo yet?)

      cheers,

    • I also am in the same boat as the original post. It has taken a lot of time to get a page working and it still looks very poor. Your post shed some light, but learning curve is dependent on a lot of things. What are we missing?
