    • Hey all

Im new to Rocket Themes and I am a Joomla beginner, but know the basics. I couldn't wait to sign up with Rocket Themes for the great templates and wanted to use Sparticus and Internet Gazette asap. I just signed up and downloaded both templates. I was stunned and disappointed to see the downloads didn't look anything like the demos. I had no clue that I had to build the demos myself, which will take weeks of time I do not have (hence the decision to buy the templates) to figure out. I know there is a demo building discussion here for a small part of the Sparticus demo but does anyone have the demo built that could show me how to do it? Does anyone have the databases set up that the demo would require and could show me how to set them up?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    • Now I get that the template is a skin and Joomla comes with the most basic of databases. Its not like Wordpress in that way where a template can look immediately like a demo. There is no language on this site that lets a newbie know this. Still, it will take weeks to get my site to look like Sparticus or Internet Gazette with just the download. Instructions would be helpful. Anyone have anything??

    • Jeez, what do you expect from a template?
The thing is that however nicely looking the templates are, you still have to learn to use joomla and its various components, modules, mambots, etc...
Then your site has to have contents in it. Otherwise its just blank and no template can solve that.
So learn to use joomla, put contents on your site.
Then dig a little bit deeper into the templates, find out module positions, play around with css's, modify the images with Fireworks, then your site can look a bit different from the demos.
If you have questions regarding modding the templates, don't hesitate to ask.
Regarding joomla, I would recommend the joomla forums and forge.

    • at the top of the sporticus template forum, in the stickies, are instructions on making it look like the demo to a degree. I used those and had mine looking pretty close to the gator sporticus variant in less than 2 days, so give it a shot.

    • It takes a lot less time to get the template looking the way you wan than adding content, which means that you have to structurally understand your site and organize it. By the time you will have added the content, your site will look the way you want, joomla, while not the most powerful CMS, is surely one of the best looking and easiest to manage. Good luck, go to the joomla.org site for additional tutorials to come to an understanding of how Joomla works. Of course it takes more than wordpress, but it is also that much more capable.

Leeann, templates in Wordpress do actually look like they do in demos right out of the box. That is what I expected. I did not know that the architecture of Joomla was such that a "plug and play" template is not possible. That is what is disappointing for someone who is new to Joomla and just wants to get a site up (hence the purchase of a template). I can easily learn Joomla, and am learning it, but the ramp up takes more time that I would have ever wanted to spend just to get my site up and running.

Apologies if this sounds harsh, but it is your responsibility, and yours alone, to understand how Joomla! (and it's templating system) works. I would suggest you do not join a template club and then expect people on the board to instruct you on some of the core technologies of Joomla!

The best place to start with Joomla! is joomla.org and the 2 default templates that come with a core install, not a paid up template club. A very good place to start is http://dev.joomla.org/content/view/1136/79/

I built a demopage in Sporticus for someone in half an hour. And it looked pretty close to the demo. Not sure where you get two weeks from. The templates really are very easy to get going.

Exactly Dan - I think I got it pretty much exactly like the demo in 30 mins or less and I am no expert - Mr Brightside, simply look at the module position diagram and assign the modules that are in the template to these positions. You should be able to turn on and off modules and change the positions to get it looking like the demo. Just like a puzzle really. Just have a play and I am sure once you get the hang of it you will never ever go back to another CMS. Take one day to learn it and then you will be away laughing.

    • it would work right out of the box if your site was set up for the template....but that is hard to expect since Joomla is so diverse on where content goes....how modules work and their placement. Joomla is not a simple myspace type interface where you simply apply a template....many programs require some tweaking....

I think if you give it a shot...you will be surprised on how fast you can learn....use teh forum search and ask questions....everyone started there....give it a shot... you joined the right club for the position you are in...as this is the most active forum of all Joomla Template Clubs...

      Good Luck
