Hey everyone, I have a question about getting insurance for your website. The lawyer I work with on my site said that I needed to form an LLC, then get General Liability insurance on that LLC for the website. I have having a very tough time trying to find a company that will insure my site.
So, question is, what do you guys do about your sites? Do you have general liability insurance on it?

It all depends on what the site is doing.

My site is a mixed martial arts website. I have fight pictures and videos on it. My lawyer said I need general liability insurance, I've called every company in town and they have said, 'you want insurance for a website?'
I'm just wondering how you guys protect your self in case of ANYTHING? You know how people are now a days, sue happy.
It's already set up my site as an LLC, not I just have to get some insurance.

I can see liability insurance for your business but I'm still confused about insuring the website.
I mean really, lets say worse case scenario someone sees one of your videos and hurts themself or someone trying some of the moves. They try to sue you for the video so in the end who are they suing? They are suing your LLC BECAUSE of something your site presented. I'd say slap up some disclaimers and make sure your physical business has insurance but I'm not your lawyer

You might want to talk to another lawyer to get a second opinion or heck, if your lawyer suggesting it, see who's they have had other clients use.

I think that Insuring a website is totally ridiculous. The only reason to insure anything is to protect yourself against the liability of unintentional damages. Unless you intend on "damaging" someone by the viewing of your website, i think it is totally unwarranted.
If you are concerned with the images that will displayed on your site and any legal-licensing issues that may arise, consider signed waivers from individuals photographed prior to posting on your site. If you have your students and staff pictured online, you may consider having those stipulations placed in membership contracts and/or employment applications forms.
Finally, if you are concerned with the graphical-nature of any photos, a simple disclaimer prior to displaying such photos would probably cover you.
As a "private business owner," I have had some experience with the above issues.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new here, and have a business background. Although I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not giving legal advice, a general disclaimer sounds fine. Do not try this at home kids!
Let's face it, people don't need a real reason to sue anyone, and the bottom line is your general liability insurance covers your business. What difference does it make if you sold a DVD, or offer streaming videos on your site? Someone who watched a DVD could sue you too. Would your lawyer want you to get Liability Insurance on each and every DVD?
It sounds like your lawyer simply doesn't understand the nature of e-commerce, and perhaps you should find one that does.
