Nice work! The feel is very appropriate to the subject matter. Visually, the reader/surfer is drawn in, which is a good thing!
I did notice a few things, although they are all really tiny, but for what they might be worth:
In addition to the previous comments, I noticed that the top image (logo_head2.gif) still has a few fragments of the clouds in the otherwise invisible (transparent) region. This creates a slightly noticeable shimmer when scrolling the site.
The postcard has some fringing (white on the outside of the black outer rim) which shows up against the darker areas of the background.
The local links section on the right hand side. . . The size of the links vs. the size of the heading vs. the size of everything else on the front page. . . The weighting seems a little off to me.
One final note, the background image ends before the bottom of the screen on higher resolution monitors (1680x1050 in this case), which doesn't quite look right. If your site statistics show a lot of people coming in at higher resolutions (1280 or higher), you might want to consider increasing the height of that image.
It is a great site, and the content (non front page) pages all come across really well.
Cal, if there is, can I vote more than once? Your blue eyes are cute, but there are some WAY hot geeks on here! LOL! ;D
(BTW, I mean geek in the best possible way, since I TOTALLY dig geeks, as opposed to nerds, which are geeks without the redeeming qualities of a sense of humor and people skills)
