Here's the process I used:
1. Installed the MC Template, did my customizations, and made it active.
2. Noticed while I was editing the template parameters that there is a newer version.
3. Clicked on the Button that says "Update" while still editing the template.
4. Was taken to the Joomla Extension Manager, which also notes that there is a new version.
5. Clicked on the Update (now from the Update Manager)
6. Got the error I first noted above.
I've used Admintools to make sure the permissions are OK, I've ensured that there's plenty of room on my hard drive.

Okay. So you did NOT do a manual install. That's okay.
Before we continue, they just now released a new Mission Control. Perhaps we should go there first and try it. LOL!
