Some good points there Peter.
A great compromise is achieved with Daniel Chapman's initiative starting soon over at ninjoomla.com, an extension club where the extensions are GNU/GPL. You pay to join the club and get access to great extensions, support forums etc, but the extensions remain GNU/GPL, so you could very well take them to the joomla.org forums and get a fix if you ever needed(though you wouldn't have to because the community of developers who are members of the club would take care of that). - Say no to Internet Explorer 6.
