500 error... Aplus.net hosting...

  • 500 error... Aplus.net hosting...

    • I'm getting speratic 500 errors on my website along with it just dissapearing totaly. While other times it runs top speed

      ???

Now it often will run flawlessly, while other times it will act like the web site doesn't exist. I've talked with my web host (aplus.net) they say it is a script problem, although they do support Joomla, even install it...

Since no editing was done to Joomla I'm quite lost....

      Could it be a plug/com/mondule?

A bad install? (seems odd though)

A server problem they don't know about?

The front page goes right to the iJoomla mag, which is rock solid... I'm doing nothing groundbreaking in web deisgn here trust me... I have zero knowledge of php and asp, so trust me no real edits have been done there either... any ideas??

      web site: www.prodnation.com

      THANKS!!!!

    • Sporadic 500 errors.... ???
I would lean towards server problem myself.....*Script problem would generally be more than sporadic*.....
Have you messed with your htaccess lately?---
another good source of 500 errors......

    • I am having the exact same issue at Aplus. I raised a ticket with them about all the 500 errors we were getting and was told they have a limit of 2 simultaneous PHP transactions on all shared plans. There is also a 30 second time out on PHP transactions. They do support Joomla, but not a PHP heavy system. I'm no expert, but that doesn't seem to work with Joomla real well. One of my clients is also on a shared plan with just 1 site and he is getting the same errors. We are looking for new hosting from a true Joomla friendly/compatible host.

    • So then I guess the question turns into who is a good host for Joomla....

Fast, well priced, good bandwith and HD space...

      Is it the Holy Grail?

    • Isn't siteground or Rochen good in hosting Joomla sites in America ?

If you're looking for a hoster in Europe you can contact me if it's for just one site. If it's for more sites I can hook you up with my supplier (I only do reselling after all). They now have 2 servers in The Netherlands which are configured especially for Joomla.

    • I'm talking to aplus's tech/service department right now... Hoping they can get the problem fixed. I would rather not move everything over, it would be a huge pain.

But if that is needed any host sugestions are apreciated... (Thanks Robby for throwing in Siteground and Rochen!!!!)

I will update this thread with what the results from Aplus.net are.

      Thanks!

    • Please do, they advised me the only solution was to move to their dedicated solution. But they could not give any solid answers as to the PHP abilities/capacity of their dedicated servers.

    • Go Daddy has been rock solid and quick to respond to any issue I may have...I give them 5 out of 5 stars so far,, though I know others have a different view of them.

    • Lately many servers i dont know have just been messing about. I was with freehostia, which is a resseller i think for liquidnet. I had been with them for three years. It was top for everything speed etc. But lately, last two months its been all of a struggle with them. At the moment as i speak, i am struggling to set up my joomla site which was shattered by them upgrading their servers. But infact they are still reliable.

Whenever you have a 500 error and you did not do anything on your script. address it to your host. They usually do updgrades and modifications to their server which may result in such problems. Some may accuse your script. But grab them by the throat and they will tell you what they are doing. My lately reported that they will be moving to a dedicated server so freehostia will be freehostia.

During what time, if found another host. ByteHost, i think they are called. it is very comprehensive, everything you need on the premium plan, including cron jobs which some servers are 'selfish with'. so you can host a wide variety of scripts even those not uptimised for smtp mailing. So far a month with them i have had 100% uptime, on a college website which i hosted with them.

I nearly moved to godaddy but was more attracted to bytehost. Godaddy looks good any way, looks like joomla people like it more, (i dont know but looks like the project website is hosted by them, so hopefully everything should be fine)

    • A few pointers when choosing Joomla hosting:
      • make sure they are running PHP as a CGI module, else you'll have to do ChMod's all the time and you will have security/access/userright issues
      • Check if they allow cron jobs. This is usefull when setting up a demo site, or having a mailinglist component like acajoom, or for automatic backups, ...
      • Register_globals should be set to off
      • Check that the php memory limit is at least 16 Mb
      • Safe Mode should be off
      • Check that you have access to the raw server logs (not only usefull for security purposes, but also to check for errors on missing files)

Besides these off course php and mysql support ;)

EDIT: I can also very much advice the Joomla Tools Suit: joomlacode.org/gf/project/jts/frs/
This runs several checks to see if your Joomla installation is ok.
