Free Open Source Alternative to MS Office

    • Some of you are already familiar with this open-source project. I checked on this a while back and I have to say that it has come a long way.

      Here's the link:

Anyone interesting in testing this suite, please report back with your findings. I for one would be interested in hearing your test-drive.

    • Thanks Robert. NeoOffice is the Mac port. I've been using it for many years now and it's perfectly adequate for normal and advanced usage. Not as sexy looking at Word and Stuff but does everything I need (and I do some mean spreadsheets). The only thing I can pick on is that the charts are not quite the same as Excel when you want to get into the really really advanced stuff but that's all.

    • OpenOffice rocks

Very complete, and nice suite. Thing is that people it's use to MS Office (including me).

See this real example. (6 months ago)

A small company have been use MS Office 2000 for long long long time, so the want to upgrade their suite
but saving $$$$ as much as possible (they basically use WORD, EXCEL, and OUTLOOK, nothing fancy, outrageous or so.) So I tell them to use the newest open Office, which can open word documents with Thunderbird.

the word processor did a very good job!
The files on excel didn't do that well (some formulas were lost, user get a little hard time with the interface, and some other things (macros))
Thunderbird manage very well their in boxes.

Well after a month an a lot of things fixed, they decide to stay with MS and bought some licenses.

      Moral thing here?

As long as the users have used MS Office for a while, they will not switch it that easy!

Reason number 2. Their clients/vendors/etc. use MS Office.

I really recommend OF to companies or individuals that have the time to learn how to use it.
It's easy, just matter of time

      my 2 cents!

    • I find a combination of Google Docs and Neoffice does me just fine. Google Docs is quite adequate for day to day documents, and the collaboration features are amazing.

    • star office was actually the name of open office first time round

i've been using open office (and star office before that) for about maybe 8 years. it used to be that you'd need microsoft office installed for some things but now open office does the job.

there might be some features that others need that open office doesn't have but for me, i don't need to use ms office anymore.

    • I prefer MS Office 2007 instead of OpenOffice :) They are two worlds apart.

    • I hear Google Apps are a nice alternative. And they are free.
