The reason I ask is because I was having issues with my reseller account and wondered if VPS would be a better solution and how hard it was to manage?
Although, the reseller made it so that I can move each site to one of 7 locations all across the US and one in the UK. So maybe the issue will work itself out.
It isn't too difficult. There is a bit of a learning curve but if you can spare a weekend or two and have access to some decent howto's you'll find it's simple enough.
If you have experience with *nix it's a walk in the park really.
One of the best things about Servint is their forum. It's packed to the brim with tips and tutes and is pretty active so help is always available. The service is top-notch... unbelievable really.
The main thing would be whether the cost is justified. I've paid enough for my reseller in six months than would cost me six years for a reseller account.
The real reason I got it was I planned on building a big social-networking site. I shelved that plan before it went live but kept the reseller.
I see that the basic Servint VPS account is $50 which isn't bad. I am currently hosting 15 sites and get paid exactly zero to do so. When and if I ever start charging anyone for anything I will switch to the VPS immediately. Servint sounds great and I bookmarked it so I won't forget when the time comes.
You talk about the forum and all the tips and tricks; like RT the forum alone sounds like it is worth the price of admission.
What about the file permissions if I upload the local copy from a Windows PC to a Unix based host?
Installing Joomla directly on the host, I guess, the installer will set all permissions as needed automatically - presuming the following steps:
1) upload the Joomla zip file,
2) unpacking directly on the host with a web based ftp service
3) installing from there.
So what do you think the FTP client (eg. Filezilla) will do in this case. Set all permissions to 777?
cu,
Michael Running Joomla 1.5.15, phpBB 3.0.6, Firefox 3.6.2
Either way they permissions will be the same. Don't worry about them... as soon as Joomla is installed you'll need to go into Global Config anyway and change all permissions to 755/644.
