    • to reach your machine externally, best thing to do is to setup your machines with dyndns.org or something similar. I don't worry about this stuff too much anymore as i'm all mac now and just use bonjour which is more reliable than lmhosts and that other MS nonsense. I just goto computername.local in my internal network. You can also install this for windows:

      developer.apple.com/networking/bonjour/index.html

That should resolve (no pun intended) all your issues.

    • I'm on my way to MacLand as well. Thanks for this thread. I should have a MacBook by the end of the week. Not sure if I'll plop down the extra dough for the MacBook Pro, though...

The IP works, however it's not static between home and the office network; also I'll have to reconfigure all the JSAS site configs to make it work...

Just seems that the Windows network names are not resolved, as it doesn't work in Vista & XP which I have installed on the Mac, basically the same problem.

I don't know enough about the networking side of things to fix it...

Now, that you have a PC and a Mac, all that's left, is to get a Linux-Gateway :P It's a breeze to configure DHCP w/ DyDNS and you can use it as Webserver for "testing under Real Life Conditions" as well as Firewall etc. :P

    • For the Mac newbies, just be careful when updating something like Joomla. In windows, I just drop a folder on top of the other and it performs a merge overwriting files with the same name only. On a Mac if the folders have the same name, poof the first folder gets nuked with everything in it. This is why I do all my upgrades to web applications from a windows machine even though I use a Mac mostly. I'm sure there's a Mac utility out there to do this properly but it's annoying that it's not built into the Finder.
