I have several sites up and running using Open realty and CMS Realty to integrate MLS listings for the state of New Hampshire into Joomla sites. I had to have someone write an import script to do the nightly import of data via an IDX feed. it would have been a lot easier if our MLS provider had a more standard way of providing the IDX data. Ahh well.
The site now hosts 21,000 properties.
For those not familiar, Open Realty is a Real estate platform that is designed to be standalone and CMS Realty is a program that integrates Open Realty into Joomla. There are plenty of addons to provide additional functions, and both are Open Source, no encoded code. Ther eare even addons for doing the imports from certain MLSs
Before I took the leap of importing the MLS data I was using EZ Realty on my site. It was a good program and Kathy was very supportive. However, after doing a lot of homework and talking with people that had done similar work I was told that Open realty would be a better fit for what I wanted to do. The main issue was the amount of data. 21,000 listings is a pretty big number and I was told the DB queries might be slow. plus as I said I had to have a custom import done so going with an open source solution was safer
You can see this functionality in a Joomla site with an RT template at

More than happy to answer questions about my experiences in getting this done.
