I have been looking at WordPress, like some designs, seems more geared towards Newspaper like sites, yes I know, it is a blog, but newspapers are like blogs.
Anyone doing anything with WP? I know there are some nice large sits using it, NYTimes for one, other sites getting 1,000,000 hits a day.
The modules/components are not as good as Joomla!, the code looks a little more strang to me than Joomla!

" 'In addition to investing in us, we are also entering a partnership with the Times to expand their existing WordPress blogging infrastructure and to create new ways of connecting WordPress bloggers with the New York Times and its readers.' "
That site looks like a WP site. I would not doubt that Automattic did their site, using WP as their foundation, but of course more bells and whistles.
I dont think I will switch, but the simplistic of WP is what is appealing, along with the blog aspects of it, which I think is what a news content site becomes, when you have many users submitting news.
Although I look in here and check up on the goings-on at Joomla, I've not long moved over completely to Wordpress. Love the code and love it's simplicity and flexibility, love the interaction with the plugins (and there's far more than I ever thought there was when I used to just have a casual interest).
There's quite a few news and magazine themes starting to be released for Wordpress, and you can find some good ones being released on GPL. My favourite is Darren Hoyt's at
He is on the verge of releasing a premium paid for theme, which really looks like it could be something fantastic, but his free theme can be adapted to suit various needs (he's got some examples of what people have done with the theme up in postings on his site).
There are other themes of a similar ilk around, such as Brandford and Structure. I'd highly recommend having a look at Wordpress, it's definitely opened my eyes.
Just reading more and more and the designer of that site, was doing an open source program called BuddyPress, well, he now works for Automaticc, so WordPress using the MU format, will be going Social Networking, which is exactly where I want to go with my new site that will be ran by a network of writer and photographers.

The cool thing about this is I see others have asked about widget inside the content area, and they got no answers to the question. I have 4 widgets set up, top, two on the side and the one at the bottom. They are all working off the widgets, so those are legit working widgets, styled and all. I even now have the fire in the headers showing up in the widgets, each with their own. I was reading how the widgets are suppose to look alike, that is the point, well, in Joomla! the point is to make the modules different, I have done this with the widgets.
