I would like to start this thread as a way to help both myself and everyone else develop sites that get great rankings on search engines. So please, post your tips, tricks, and comments so we can all benefit.
I'll start it off with the (very) little bit that I know:
1. Write your page content so that it uses many of the top keywords for what you are promoting.
2. Avoid using images to get words across. Use text instead.
3. Match the Metadata in your page headers with what you have in your page content.
David: Go here:
search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
and click on "Submit Your Site for Free"
(the first link, you need to register so if you have a Yahoo email account just enter that in).
Another great place with a wealth of information on SEO is
www.compassdesigns.net
It is run by Barry North who is on the Joomla! Dev Team. He is also a very nice guy who has always responded great with my questions.
Get as many inbound links to your site as possible - from sites of a similar theme if possible. Also try to get the right anchor text for your links. So if I want my site to show up in search engine results for "
Commercial Tiler
", that's the anchor text the links should use - just as I have done
OpenSEF (or your fave advanced SEF component) is a must too. This allows you to get keywords in your urls which is a must, but it's also a bonus if someone posts a link on a forum/site without specifying anchor text, like this:
As I have manipulated the anchor text to contain my keyword of "commercial tiling".
I also configure OpenSEF to use the title alias for my sef urls (as opposed to title). This allows you to have more control over the keywords in your url without affecting your content title.
I also use the
Joomlatwork SEF patch
on some of my sites as it allows you to set custom page titles for you site pages, having keywords in the title tag can have a great affect on rankings. I believe you can now do some of this in Joomla without the patch.
It will take time but to show up but it's worth it. Just write good content and build links constantly - the more the better.
Yeah I recommend
OpenSEF
, I've used on all my sites with no problems at all. I tried SEFAdvance at first but it costs about $40 and isn't nearly as good as OpenSEF so avoid it!
There is a new component out now,
ARTIO JoomSEF
, it's getting some good reviews and is supposed to be simpler that OpenSEF, that might be worth a try. I don't personally find OpenSEF complex though, the advanced options can be left alone to begin with but they are worth visiting - like I said before, I set it up to use title alias and a site.com/category/title-alias.html structure.
