I was dissatisfied with phpbb3 running without a wrapper so I tried
Agora
and I must say that so far it has been great! 1.5 Native and quite impressive actually!

You guys are fast on the replies today. Tell the truth, you are just hanging out to see what the new RT flavor will be for December . Terp, when I followed the link to the RT demos for phpbb I was floored. Andy and RT will make a fortune off those once the phpbb community sees them. They blow away any of the (free) themes I saw over at the phpbb website. I might just roll with the default phpbb3 template on a Joomla! 1.5 install until RT releases the forum themes.
Switching gears to the bridge for a second. Has that matured to stable? I was reading the forum for the bridge but there doesn't seem to be much activity over there. Also, will the phpbb3 management be done through its own admin panel or through the Joomla! panel (via the bridge?).
Not much chatter over on the Rocketwerx forums is a good sign...people usually only post when they are having problems. I have no problems with it whatsoever running in 'sync' mode.
All the forum management is currently done on the phpbb3 side.
Just got done touring through Joo!BB and Agora and they are both very impressive. I lean towards Joo!BB a little more due to the admin tools being so nicely laid out and detailed. The true test will come tomorrow when I load up phpBB3 and the RT bridge. Having the forum themed the same as the website is just a huge point in favor of phpbb3.

So I couldn't wait to test out the bridge. Phpbb3 is just an awesome forum. At the moment, I haven't been able to link to it properly. If I wrap it, then the URL never changes to reflect navigation through the forum itself. If I set up an external link then I have no control over the appearance of the forum (it goes to full screen) and modules I need to associate around it.
Also, I suppose the user groups in phpbb3 will controlled separately from Joomla ?
Ahhh, now you see the beauty of those upcoming phpbb3 templates. You will have regular long-tail URLs for the forums when running in sync mode and not wrapped. That is huge to me, too...rather than all having mysite/forums.html as the URL.
Yup, anything phpbb3 related will be controlled from the phpbb3 admin side of the house...for now.
I am not going to use the group feature, though, as the #1 fan of JomSocial....much better grouping for me than phpbb3.
