    • Dear All,

      I am planning to have a good blogging component for multi-user blogging. Basically, I want to give my users a facility to maintain their blog (or portfolio).

      Can you please suggest something which works best?

      I knw there are a lot of paid components available out there, but I need to be sure of what I am buying before spending.

      Your suggestions please.

      Thanks in advance

    • There is no good Joomla blogging component.

      Until Joomla fixes the problem they have with author/editor issues, which I don't expect in Joomla 1.6, it will be an on-going problem.

      It has been known since Joomla 1.0.0 and over 3 years now it hasn't been fixed yet.

      You didn't say what issues you're referring to. Please describe. You make be talking about concerns that many of us have overlooked. Thanks.

    • Hi,

      There's this awesome great Blog tool I recently heard about.

      It's called Joomla!

      :cheesy:

      Sorry for my sarcasm, but many seem to forget, Joomla! itself has all the blog features you could ever want. Ever wondered why joomla has Blog category and Blog section layout menus?

      You can make Joomla work in a way that every new "registered" user will become a publisher instead of default registered.

      Which begs the questions: Why did the Joomla mothership use WordPress for so long for their news/blogs? I wish i could find my screenshots. ;)

    • Hi Terp,

      It was meant sarcastic, I would say that 99% would suffice by using Joomla as their blogging system. Unfortunately many of us have a tendency to first look at 3rd party components instead of checking out what Joomla itself can do.

      Of-course it can't do all. But again, the blogging capabilities of Joomla will be sufficient for many.

      I myself was part of first trying all kinds of 3rd party extensions myself, only to find out, having 3rd party extensions can give so many other undesired outcomes. ( a simple example would be running SEF and then finding out your 3rd party component wasn't written for SEF and breaks all your links).

      It's of-course not a must to use the core Joomla capabilities, and thanks for all the beautiful 3rd party extensions that Joomla has. I am just not a fan of them in every occasion that comes up. I first try to deal with it in a clean Joomla site before installing 3rd party extensions.

    • I'm with you, Piet; I, too, was being sarcastic as always. ;)

      ...and like you, I do try to stick to the core with as few extensions as possible. And I support the J! mothership's premise of keeping the core as lean and mean as possible and not adding so much capability that it becomes bloated with stuff not everyone uses....and support their decision to removed the crappy polls from the core, too. :)

      Joomla can be used to blog dating back to its inception, but it's not built to be that way. There are critical elements like pings, trackbacks, comments, etc. that aren't included. You can resolve this with some third-party extensions, but the limitation in all cases is having multiple users. The main issue there is the current limitations of ACL, which are rumored to be addressed in Joomla 1.6.

      Presently, there is no groundwork for isolating a specific user(s) to a specific category or section.

      There are a number of reasons for wanting this, but the main reason is hosting a team of bloggers on a site and giving each their own "blog" or the ability to cross-pollinate content.

      The very essence of hosting a blog is to give multiple users the ability to create unique blogs.

      In reference to the author/editor/publisher problems :

      (copied from : forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=431&t=359791 )
      written by : RysiuM

      From all my tests and research in Joomla I found that the following roles have following authorities in Joomla 1.5.8/ I have prepared simple table that shows what kind of authority particular groups have to articles at article lifecycle..

      Code:
      Add SeeU SeeP EditU EditP Publ
      Registered No No ALL No No No
      Author ALL No ALL No Owner No
      Editor ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL No
      Publisher ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL

      Explanation of codes used above:
      Actions:
      Add = Write new article
      SeeU = See unpublished article
      SeeP = See published article
      EditU = Edit unpublished article
      EditP = Edit published article
      Publ = Edit and change article status Published/Unpublished

      Authorities:
      No = Disallowed
      Owner = Allowed only for articles with this user as an author
      All = Allowed for articles written by all users

      Now I see a little flaw in this logic. There are four issues:
      1. Problem: Author can not edit his article, which he just wrote because he can not see it as the article is in unpublished status. Resolution: Author should be able to see his own unpublished articles.

      2. Problem: The same as above. Resolution: Author should be able to edit his own unpublished articles.

      3. Problem: Author can edit hos own articles after they have been approved (published). It means in example that Author can re-insert "bad" content to the article, that was removed (censored) by publisher. Resolution: Author should not be able to edit any articles that have been published.

      4. Problem: Editor can not publish articles, but he can edit already published content. The same example as described above that editor can re-insert content that was removed by publisher. Resolution: Editor should not be able to edit any articles that have been published.
