    Need Input for furthering education

Posted 17 years 11 months ago
    • Hello, I have been working with Joomla/Mambo for few years now...have some experience in oscommerce, zencart, xcart, and few others...but I dont really think I have quality skills.

I sort of jumped into building sites and have thought myself what I have needed to know or have sought help in forums. I have started taking some tutorials online for different courses but wanted others input on the ones you think are worthwhile.

Should I take an HTML course or should I just stick with say a Dreamweaver course as that is the Editor I use?
Going to take PHP/mysql course also...

what else should I take? see alot of stuff on ruby on rails...no this is not used in Joomla but maybe on other projects? Ajax?

Thanks in advance for the info....I looked at some college degree plans as guides but the differ so much....

    • Although I'm not a 'coder' I bridge the creative and development at Verizon Online (the ISP division). I work (and party) with most of the developers.

They NEVER use Dreamweaver. They do everything in HTML, XML, Javascript, AJAX. Some even have web skills in C#.

Of course they mean it in fun, but they joke with me about using PHP and MySQL. They say that .NET is the way to go.

Eve3n though that they have written off PHP and MySQL, they are not aware on the developments in it's use - and the security issues that are constantly being address.

In my opinion, the top businesses use .NET mostly. But the most employable individual is one that has major coding AND design skills. Having both of these skills will let you write your on job ticket. That market is up right now.

UPDATE: But I'm not sure if you'll get a job with that suit. ;D

    • word is that php will reach pinnacle of its development in about a year or three.

.net (asp.net) on the other hand is super extensible so will continue to grow long into the future.

hopefully you are stubborn about staying with open source.... if so... go with ruby (on rails)

      What's 'ruby', GollumX?

Ruby is a red gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). The color is caused mainly by chromium. Its name comes from ruber, Latin for red. Natural rubies are exceptionally rare, but synthetic rubies (sometimes called created ruby) can be manufactured fairly cheaply.

oops wrong one... here you go...

Ruby is a reflective, object-oriented programming language. It combines syntax inspired by Perl with Smalltalk-like object-oriented features, and also shares some features with Python, Lisp, Dylan and CLU. Ruby is a single-pass interpreted language. Its main implementation is free software distributed under an open-source license.
      from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_programming_language
ruby was created by Yukihiro Matsumoto, also know by the handle 'Matz'

      interesting titbit...
      # The famous Hello World
      # program is trivial in
      # Ruby. You don't need:
      #
      # * a "main" method
      # * newline escapes
      # * semicolons
      #
      # Here's the code:

      puts "Hello World!"

this is the best way to give it a try......its fun.... http://tryruby.hobix.com/

      ruby on rails..........
Ruby on Rails, often called RoR, or just Rails, is an open source web application framework written in Ruby that closely follows the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture. It strives to allow real-world applications to be developed in less code with a minimum of configuration. Rails makes extensive use of Ruby's metaprogramming functionality, allowing Rails to create a domain specific language that many programmers find more productive than traditional frameworks. Rails is primarily distributed through RubyGems, the official packaging format and distribution channel for Ruby libraries and applications.

I recently purchased the book "Head First HTML with CSS and XHTML" I can tell you it is a very good book for really understanding HTML & CSS. It is definitely not an advanced book but it is very interesting in the way it teaches the subject. They have mentioned an upcoming PHP/MySQL book but there is no definitive date for release.

I too used a WYSIWYG editor and was able to get by but the more I have worked with Joomla, templates, SMF the more desire I have had to really understand it. The head first series seems really good for this. BTW, they have Ajax and Java script books as well

www.headfirstlabs.com - you can see samples from the books

    • Thanks GlooumX for the info. I'm not a coder, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Also, I work around a lot of programmers at Verizon and have learned a little XML and CSS - PHP working with Joomla (Mambo earlier). Ruby sound great. Is it like AJAX?

Gerard, that is probably a book for me - and the MySQL and PHP book when it is released. I'm bookmarking this thread and saving the name.

Thanks to both of you guys - as another rush of the shakes washed over me in anticipation of the first of the month!

    • I can't believe that I didn't insult anyone here - after the Christmas party. Yikes! If anyone sees anything else that I did - I didn't blank out, like some drunk, but I do realize that I was on the forums a lot longer than I thought. Sorry! I can delete it if you want.
