    • 2gigs, SEF is a huge killer, but i think overall it's worth it. When load is up as high as it has been, generally another CPU is the best option. This is a single proc machine, but i think dual procs, or even dual-dual-core would give some breathing room.

    • Looks like the new server transfer went very well. I have noticed that the RT site seems a bit more speedy now. Good work guys! Would you expound upon what you did, Andy? Was Kevin able to help? Enquiring minds want to know!

    • actually i'm considering buying apple xserves and colocating them. They are really well designed machines with 3 drives, dual dual-core, upto 32gigs, redundant power supplies, remote reboot etc. They aren't cheap but they are pretty high end machines and compare well to equivalent ibm or hp products. The way i figure it, when your business relies on the website being available and responsive, it's probably worth investing in decent infrastructure.

Wish I had seen that when you posted it. I could've gotten you a screamin' deal on a Dell server. I don't know why people dismiss Dell servers. I'll be the first to admit that their desktops/laptops are crap compared to other vendors (as a sit here on my Dell notebook, next to my Dell desktop. blah), but their Enterprise team has done amazing things with server hardware... *shrug*

    • ThePlanet does a nice job with their servers. If I had liked their game control panel I would have gone with them. The guys who started Softlayer, which is where my game servers are, I believe all came from ThePlanet.

What kinda of specs did you get on the server?

    • Dragging this thread completely off topic, but....

The 3.2 and the 3.73Ghz dual core procs are "blah" at best. (Intel Proc Numbers 5060 and 5070)

Not trying to knock the server you bought by any means. Sounds like it will perform really well (and I can't complain from a user perspective). In the future, drop in an Intel 5100 series dual core (or a 5300 series quad-core bad-ass proc LOL). Let the site SCREAM...

...and now back to your regularly scheduled thread....

    • I have RAM envy :(

On our servers we have never run a website, are they more of a drag on the hard driver or the ram? I know game servers demand a lot of ram and only map changes actually put stress on the drives.
