Yup, fireworks is basically "the" tool. Aside from that I use TextMate and the web developer tools extensions for Firefox. Also Xylescope is pretty handy for working out CSS issues.
Are you familiar with Photoshop? Obviously you have heard of it but do you know how to use it? If so, why fireworks over photoshop? What are teh advantages you see in fireworks?
I used to use Photoshop when it was at about version 5. But ever since fireworks 1.0 came out i've been hooked. The main difference is that everything in fireworks is vector based. This means that you can create something, apply styles and effects, and then easily change it. Resize, change color, change effects, etc. I know that photoshop has this kind of functionality now, but it's really clunky and 'tacked' on to the powerful bitmap functionality that photoshop is famous for. Fireworks was designed this way from the start, and more specifically it was designed for web development where photoshop was designed for photo editing.
There have been several interesting articles in the past that have compared creating the same image with photoshop and fireworks. Fireworks almost always requires less steps to produce the desired result. I just hope adobe does not kill this fantastic product now they've bought macromedia.
Now that Kevin D. is on board at RT what tools and OS platform does Kevin use?

I tend to use a combination of Photoshop CS2, Fireworks (need to get my head fully round it), Dreamweaver MX + template code extension and the CSS viewer extension for FireFox.
I am trying to find a good tool CSS tool that can help root out CSS conflicts.
I currently use topstyle pro but it doesn't offer anything like that.

I'm running WindowXP on a PC currently, though I will soon be moving most of my development to a Mac. I've been using Macs for a little while now with different companies and clients ive worked on location with, primarily for print design and video production, and I just fell in love with the OS.
I use Adobe Photoshop CS2 for my photo editing and bitmap manipulation. I used to use Photoshop for all of my web development as well, but in the past year I've completely switched all of my web design and layout design to Macromedia Fireworks 8 and never looked back. Fireworks is a much more intuitive program for web design, mainly due to its vector handling and non destructive effects as Andy mentioned above. It makes the typical web design things you do so much quicker and easier to handle.
For coding I primarily use Macromedia Dreamweaver 8, though its a bit of overkill considering that I only use the code editing mode as I usually code everything by hand, and the color coding / organization utilities make that a bit easier than a simple text editor. When I move over to the Mac for development, I'll be using some of the great coding tools recommended by the Mac users here at RT! I also use the Web Developers Tools and Firebug Firefox extensions.
