Three years ago I wanted to create a website different from using static html pages. You all know how painstaking that was. I did a lot of research and finally stumbled upon CMS.
In your opinions, is Joomla! still the king? I don't plan on switching, but I saw Drupal has a new release and that triggered my question.
I tried phpNuke, Mambo, e107, but not Drupal. I love Joomla! like an extension of my body. It's part of my being, my everyday life and I couldn't see myself learning a new CMS just to be disappointed with it. I think the templates for Joomla! are the best ever and it's fun to customize and work with them.
If you have experienced different CMS, then let me know your thoughts and/or comparisons!

I am a reformed phpnuke, and postnuke user.
I used postnuke and phpBB for several years on a satire/fake news site I no longer have.
Once I checked out mambo at the time (joomla soon to fork) and started moving to it there was no going back for me.
The fresh robust code after years of screwing around with postnuke was refreshing. Postnuke compared to Joomla is like comparing a Fresh new caddy to an old rusty buick. There is much better separation between content and presentation in joomla compared to postnuke/phpnuke. The Installation of add-ons (mods-bots-components-hacks etc.) within joomla just seem to be much more intuitive with a much better installation scheme.
I have borked many things adding mods/hacks to postnuke just to get half the functionality of a standard joomla/mambo install.
I have also toyed with phpwebsite (which I found very bloated), SimpleCMS which I found just a bit too simple and a few others.
I have been looking at modxcms.com and am waiting for it to mature a bit before test driving it again.

I am now quite interested in a little CMS called Website Baker (
www.websitebaker.org
). The community is much smaller than Joomla's and the code team is only a few people, but I have to honestly say it is the easiest CMS to use that I have ever come across. And I have spent hours and hours testing out many different CMS's.
It also has a significant number of modules you can add on as well. It's not like Joomla where there are 14 image galleries to choose from, but there are two or three that are still half decent.

I agree about Drupal templates, but surely there is an opening for a dedicated team to start developing professional drupal templates?
I'm moving over from Joomla! to Drupal now, and not having pro level templates to choose from is a pain, but on the positive side will actually mean I create a totally unique site by creating my own theme
If anyone is interested as to why I am moving over to Drupal, the main biggies for me are unlimited section/categorisation, and sef url's that just work. On the downside...no real decent forum integration to speak of, but that's something I can cope with.

I have so much invested in Joomla, but I am considering delving into Drupal for these very reasons. The abyssmal look and feel of the templates has held me back

Yes, permissions is another.
I'm in the fortunate position that I do not have current live sites that are running on Joomla. I got into a position twice where I was ready to launch sites running on J!, but on both occasions I held back as I was just not happy about committing to J! long term.
The reason I fell in love with J! initially was it's ease of use and quick learning curve, but now I see more limitations that Drupal seems to be able to provide answers for with a relatively small amount of php knowledge. In a word - flexibility.
I'm not saying that Drupal is better than J!, but I now see J! as more of a system that is ready to do more out of the box, whereas Drupal is more of a framework that can be expanded with ease as and when required.
...now just get me some templates...I mean themes!
