Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think the section>category>content model is changing in 1.5, neither are the basic permissions.

The SEF issue for me is more a problem with ease of use, you can have nice SEF url's in J!, but in Drupal you can configure them and not ever have to worry about them again (almost)

J!1.5 will not make any change to my decision to move to Drupal.

    • Oh, man, David... he was just begging for someone to bite. You couldn't resist, could you? ;D :D ;D

Drupal, blah, blah, blah... .NetNuke, XOOPS, Achoo! I think I've played with them all.

I have a buddy who swears by Expression Engine. Not open source, but he says that's part of the beauty.

JOOMLA! I'm too stupid or too old to learn something else.

i wasn't looking for anyone to bite, I really don't have the time to play games. You tried loads of CMS's and stuck with J! - good on you, but the fact that most of these systems/frameworks are open source means that inevitably people will look at other choices when the need arises or when they feel a system is not suited for their purpose.

My example, of a community site, show this very well. Drupal out of the box will give you most of the features that are required to setup a community online. I felt J! couldn't do this as well, so I am switching. No hard feelings about J! and if I have a client that requires a site that J! fits well, I will recommend it and happily build their site.

    • Hehe. Nah I wasn't trying to get anyone to bite. I hadn't studied or tested J! 1.5 yet so I was just askingfor my own understanding because the OP's questions/comments illuminated several of J!s weaknesses,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but seems that I had heard long ago (the Beta Release of 1.5) that Jommla 1.5 would offer unlimited Sections. I do think that many of the differences are being worked out in 1.5. BUT...

A little competition does hurt! I spurs on innovation - and if Andy reads this thread, it will only motivate him to a more excellent level of productivity - which may mean more choices and additional folks taking advantage of the RT wealth as the RT empire expands.

      Maybe!

    • I am looking forward to Joomla 1.5... I also agree that starting a Drupal theme company could be a really good business idea....

Also I wanted to mention Wordpress. It's got nice SEO URLs out of the box and in the right hands can be very beautiful and powerful...

    • IMHO Drupal is better for noncommercial community portals. Joomla! is better for everything else.

I've not seen this anywhere, in fact I thought I read the opposite somewhere. Does anyone have a definitive answer on this? J! without this restriction would be such a better cms. It's a key benefit of Drupal.

Quite clearly that is a ridiculous comment, even if it is in your humble opinion.

NO CMS is definitively better than another, it is your experience and ability that makes the difference.

    • I believe there are 2 things which make Joomla! a better CMS than the above mentioned and the rest that were not :o

First, the user interface in both frontend and backend is the best ive seen. Before joomla, I had done absolutely nothing to do with web but the ease of using joomla allowed me to pick up loads of things extremely quickly.

Secondly, this is nothing to do with the software itself, but the community surrounding Joomla! is still, as I see it, Joomla!s most important quality. No matter where you venture, as long as it focused at joomla!, you will always find a friendly face.

Ive tried Drupal, phpNuke & e107 after my initial play with Joomla!. My conclusion was ultimately that Joomla! was the better CMS for me. phpNuke annoys me for too many reasons and I have long term grudges when it comes to CMSs :D . Drupal seems pretty good, and have seen it in use on some friends websites. The lacking, as we all know, is the template diversity which dilutes its potential.

      So why choose Joomla!

      For its
      1. Community - IMMENSE ;D
      2. Ease to any "newbie"
      3. Template diversity (Rockettheme especially ;) )
      4. Third Party Extensions - theres a hell of a lot of them :D
