I could not agree more Penn, £1000 a year that's cheap here in Oz we pay 6k a year for the dedicated server but it runs our clients sites so it is offset. I am quite impressed with VPS though very cost effective and the speed is brilliant.
I installed Jreviews last night, and it required php 5.2 ioncube and json extension, it was a relatively simple task having control over your own box. As a note Jreviews is a huge module, to configure, but looks quite good.
We also have several shared host accounts, Just Host seems very reliable quite happy, Fast Host (UK) reliable but very slow to work with from Oz, but friends tell me loads quite well from over there. Blue Host very impressed for a shared host, and very good support. Go Daddy, not so impressed and don't like the interface.
Retired, but build and run websites for organisations of school leaders and others - e.g. http://www.icponline.org, http://www.aspa.asn.au, http://www.appa.asn.au

I also have had a dedicated server at Planet for a couple of years - price is good ($US150 p/m), service has been excellent (on the very few occasions that I've had to use it), and the space/bandwidth is great for my dozen or so sites on there.
