Client needs an email newsletter sent to her 1500 contacts

  • Client needs an email newsletter sent to her 1500 contacts

Posted 15 years 1 month ago
    • I have a rather "strong" client who is requesting that I set up a way to send out 1500 to 2500 emails or MORE each month to her business contacts. She wants me to do it as her "web guy" which is great but she is a very strong personality person. I want to help because if I don't I put my job with her in jeopardy, but if I choose the wrong solution or can't pull it off I am in trouble. I see a few email "blast" solutions for Joomla out there. Any suggestions by anyone with their experience would be greatly appreciated!

These are "permission" based emails that I will be sending to, not spam...

    • First, ask yourself what her host/email provider can handle. How many emails can she pump out at once. 1500 is not much. Probably sending 200 at a time or something will work. Next, does she need email marketing or to just send out some emails.

Cheetah Mail is an email marketing firm. That is one option. I am sure others will pipe in with alternatives that are cheaper and better suited for those numbers. I know most people want analytics and other measurable data to see how much $$$ is generated per email, etc etc. Have her pay someone to handle her BULK EMAIL SERVICES if she wants all the marketing analytics.

Be strong and let her know that email marketing has NOTHING to do with "web guy" position other than setting up the emails she wants to send. Sure, do some research on the best options. but don't get stuck doing something for free. Besides, strong client or not, you shouldn't feel threatened because you have to be honest and may have to tell her to pony up for extra services.

      Good luck.

    • I would strongly suggest going to a 3rd party. if you start sending that many, your host is going to come knocking and will most likely ask you to go dedicated or something. Plus if you get on a 3rd party it make your life easier when your newsletter actually gets into the customers inbox and not spam box. Try mailchimp. They are just amazing in delivery and content. beat constant contact hands down. And for up to 2500 users its just $30 /mo. www.mailchimp.com/pricing/ You can also go pay as you go, but monthly is good. Also look who is using the mailing service.i.e. www.mailchimp.com/customers/

    • You might as well make a lttle money while you do it. Campaign Monitor allows you to rebrand there service so you can charge what you like (within reason)

    • There are two alternatives to look at, both of which are strong reputable companies. You'll have to do the math yourself to see which option is best.

Constant Contact offers unlimited flat rate campaigns for a monthly rate and includes stats reporting.

Campaign Monitor offers a different cost structure where you only pay each time you send out a campaign and also includes stats reporting.

I've used and been very happy with both, and also continue to use Campaign Monitor on a regular basis for my own clients. CM allows for custom html templates (if you want to build one that resembles a Joomla template, this is possible). Last I checked Constant Contact does not allow for custom html (you have to use one of their premade templates), but this may have changed as of recently.

As Judd points out - you can rebrand CM and setup your own pricing. Personally, I prefer to have the customer pay CM directly, and I charge them two fees for my work: 1 fee for the initial template creation ($200-$300) and 1 fee for subsequent emails where I insert the content for them into that template ($50-$80 each time). If you do go the option of rebranding CM and having the customer pay more per campaign, you run the risk of them discovering that they can do it themselves directly with CM at a lower price.

Good luck - let me know if you have any other questions.

    • My daytime job I work for an organization as their Director of Marketing and do mostly Internet Marketing. We have various lists that range from 2,000 emails to 100,000+.

I can assure you from experience you do NOT want to use anything built for Joomla at this point. The newsletter components out there are fine for 10 to 200 people but they're very lacking and also run you a very high risk of getting your IP/domain blocked/blacklisted.

I recommend the following companies for sending out emails:

      www.MailChimp.com
      www.Aweber.com

Both are top notch and have working relationships with most ISP's to insure the emails get through the filters. Secondly, they both have advanced tracking capabilities (MailChimp is a little better for this).

MailChimp is pretty affordable and once the lists and campaigns are setup it's pretty painless to send the emails. They also offer a crapload of plugins and modules for various things like WP, Joomla, Magento, etc...

I'd say go with MailChimp and do it the RIGHT way. BTW, we use MailChimp when we send to our lists over 50,000+.

MailChimp does offer quite a few templates pre-built as well you can choose from for your client.

      Enjoy!

Oh, and if she needs any email marketing or internet marketing hit me up :)

    • A cron job with the newest release of acajoom should take care of a 1500 blast easy enough....if you plan to use it though, as stated above, you need to check your email limits on your host. Consider a separate dedicated SMTP email account just for blasting.

    • Agreed, don't use acajoom! But there is a component that ties together Constant Contact with your J! Site. It does a nice job.

You really want to use a professional dedicated email marketing program. I use constant contact, but yes aweber or mailchimp are good as well.
