Transfering your Dev site to Live site?

Posted 15 years 1 month ago
    • Im still really confused how this works ....if all my links in my dev site are at dev.mysite.com and I transfer my dev site to the live site...aren't the links going to still be dev.mysite.com? (which does not make sense to me)

Can anyone explain how this works? Please

    • 1. Use JoomlaPack for the backup stuff.
      2. In configuration.php have a look at $live_site ""

    • All links created in Joomla are relative to the root directory or folder for the server you place it it.

When the you move the site all the links will work automatically.

If you have created links manually you will have to update them.

If this is your first time moving a site, I suggest using JoomlaPack.

It will back up your site and database and create an installer that will automate the process.

    • When you update the site you should take it off line temporarily.

It's always best to test new stuff on a dev site before you make changes to a live site.

Of course simple stuff like basic .css changes, logos, ect can be made on a live site, but if you are testing out a new components or making big changes it's better to test them out first....

Or at least make a back up of your live site before making changes so you can restore / revert to the latest working version if you have a problem.

    • ok....so what ever major change i do on my dev site for testing im gonna have to put my live site in maintenance and add on the changes once they tested out ok my dev site ( so im doing it twice...right)

Im thinking I could joomla pack any changes on the dev then upload any changes to the livesite

    • JoomlaPack creates and entire copy of the site, including the database and to 'update a site' requires you to wipe out your live site and database then run the installer.

So you won't be able to apply incremental updates as you've mentioned.

If it's a 'big change' such as adding a a larger third party component you've never used before, test it on the dev site.

If it works, simply install it on the live site.

Also note that you may not want to upload some of the changes you make on a dev site to the live site, for example, if you are trying to decide which gallery component to use, you may download and install three different components.

In the end, you'll only want to install the component you've decided to use.

Besides that you may install something that causes conflicts with other components.

So you wouldn't want to be uploading all those changes.

    • Partial restoration using J! 1.5 migration feature:
The first step is to backup only those database tables whose content you want to transfer to the new site. This can be performed though JoomlaPack. Start by using the table exclusion filter to exclude all database tables except the ones you want to keep. If all you need is the content, good candidates is the content and categories tables. Next up, perform a database only backup. The resulting SQL file is your migration data.
