    • well.. 50 dollars probably isn't going to be enough for a dedicated server.

and if you plan on 50,000 to 100,000 users you'll probably need a huge dedicated server or possibly a server cluster to handle that much load. depending on how often each user visits.

    • Listen, go check siteground.com

      they give # 40,000 MB Web space & # 900 GB Traffic a month. Thats a lota traffic I'm guessing. it's only $5.00 a month too!

I have a litle trick too when it comes to high bandwidth sites, well it's not a trick but a work around.

Buy 2 accounts (or more!) then for the main page use 1 account then another section use a different account. What this does is distribute the load...

If this is not an option (I did it for one of my clients sites that gets HUGE traffic) then start selling advertising and allot of it. if your getting that many signups of a target market, advertisers shouldn't be that hard to sell.

    • I'd say start off with a VPS - the upgrade to a dedicated unit can happen a few months down the line and be virtually unnoticable to your userbase. With that said, I absolutely adore Surpass Hosting - they're amazing and their VPS plans are definately within your price range. However, remember this - you cannot expect (in your wildest dreams :D ) that a "shared hosting plan" (ala the siteground.com $5 thing) to hold you. I've crashed numerous shared hosting plans over the past few years with various hosts, so with as big as you are now and how very big you're getting, remember this fact and just jump straight to the VPS and dedicated server world.

      vps.surpasshosting.com/#planbox

Now, that's not really my biggest concern with your project - while you've got some obviously lofty goals (hopefully obtainable!) you have to think about whether or not Joomla! is, well, able to handle that. If you ever get to a MySpace-like traffic level (or even a percentage of it - like 1/4 etc.) Joomla will most undoubtebly be eaten alive (unless you use one of those caching components on extensions.joomla.org).

I hate to say it, but when you get to that point, Drupal might be your next step.

Please... please listen to what im actually writing...

I said for the beginning $50 is my limit... and the beginning isn't 50 000... if it would be 50 000, I would probably be able to buy a much greater server.

Also I said the bigger and stronger it gets, the bigger and stronger i'll make the server.

Justin = Thanks but I probably won't use this server lol... haha :/

Christian = Thanks... but I can't choose any of them if I dont know the difference between vps and dedicated....... please read my above post for more details.

    • I'm not so concerned about Joomla... but its component.
If CB dies... my site will die... but if cb can hold another year, Im sure Ill be able to help them out by donating and more..

It would be funny if I'd sponsor them :P

Remember, with Joomla 1.5 coming this year and every component that I use expand.. I have no doubt in this.

    • right now I HAD to turn off the site for lots of errors... but the members dont expect XUS v2 coming out wednesday with the new design etc...

But ok, last time I checked my users was on the 28th... we had more than 1250 users... launched on Jan 04.
(Remember, a Profile site doesnt need to advertise alot itself... the Users invite their contacts and friends to have fun)

Unique pages were more than 400.

    • Hosting package
A lot of people out there buy a shared hosting package and expect to be able to run a site with hundreds of hits per second on that one. We have to make it clear here, that Joomla is not static HTML. You may be able to service hundreds, if not thousands of users per second with static HTML pages, but Joomla needs quite some CPU power and if you plan a site with more than about 5 hits per second, you should directly look for a dedicated server, even more hits, and you should think about a load balancing system, several servers and a MySQL cluster. There is an interesting thread on this one here. For a normal set up, look around in this forum, there are several threads with the experience of the users. Especially the experiences with different providers are very interesting.

    • you mentioned that you're moving your site to vortex. vortex is the chunkiest template yet. massive actually.

myspace and the all the other BIG portals use the bare minimum of images.. relying instead on css background colors.

the less images in your template... the more you can put in your content.

bandwidth will be an issue... and remember.. there is no such thing as "unlimited bandwidth".
