That's really useful and helpful information. I can see that I'm duplicating unnecessarily. I have tried too many roads to get to Rome.
I'll have a go at doing all you say and will let you know how I get on.

No worries. It's a confusing game and a heck of a lot of code doing things to make things easier for us...but sometimes it backfires.
I'm stumped on the validation issue though, which makes me think an SEF or Security extension was installed and maybe not used or uninstalled, but had made changes to the htaccess file first.
Most extensions for Joomla install, but don't completely uninstall and can leave junk there for you or don't change files back. Sometimes that stuff causes issues down the road.
We'll just keep troubleshooting here. :cheesy:

I did add an extension today (xmap) when I was trying to get to grips with SEF stuff and creating a sitemap, and I uninstalled it when I started asking for help. Don't know if that would have affected anything, because I think I was having problems beforehand.
I'm off to bed now and will tackle things tomorrow.....
Can't tell you how much help you've been to a completely self-trained newbie! - I can see clearly now the brain has gone.....

- Have you checked your index files, and configuration (htaccess) against the necessary parse files? Since sometimes they "blocking" eachother and in the end corrupt parsemodes and everything. I worked with a client earlier that had almost same problem, also with K2.

Okay, I've uploaded a clean install of Joomla and the database (not been an easy ask due to permission issues with the server
)
However, the site still hangs when I try to enable Apache mod_rewrite.
(I'm afraid I don't know how to check against parse files Jonathan)
Would appreciate some more advice now I have a 'cleaner' site!

hmmm. Just found out from the web host that they don't support apache mod_rewrite, so that's why it 'hangs' when I tried to change the settings.
Any ideas for a blogging comment system, other than SuperBlogger, which will work for this? - I can see clearly now the brain has gone.....

A host not supporting mod_rewrite is a little weird, but that does explain why there was an issue.
As for SuperBlogger, I'm not sure it requires SEF to be turned on. That's odd to me because it's designed to just overlay the Joomla article and blog category layouts and can be turned on and off for various areas of the site.
Have you tried it with SEF turned off and SuperBlogger turned on? Also remember that some of the items in there require configuration, so if you have a share link turned on but not linked to a proper account, it may be held up there.
